Polyvidone

Iodophors are labile complexes of elemental iodine with macromolecular carriers that both increase the solubility and provide sustained release of iodine. Povidone-iodine is a water-soluble iodophor that is used as an antiseptic and is said to be free of the undesirable effects of iodine tincture. However, iodine can be absorbed from it through burned areas (17), vaginal mucosa (18), oral mucosa (19), and in children even with normal skin (20). Povidone-iodine is discussed in a separate monograph under the title Polyvidone. [Pg.318]

Polyvidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone, povidone) is a variable-weight polymer of the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidi-none. When it enters the body it causes histologically characteristic reactions in tissues with which it comes into contact (1,2). [Pg.328]

There have been reports of liver damage from polyvidone (18). [Pg.330]

Pathological fractures of several bones, and destructive lesions seen radiologically in other bones, have been reported in patients who had received repeated intravenous injections of polyvidone for many years (28,29). Biopsies of the fracture sites showed both intracellular deposits of polyvidone and mucoid changes in the affected cells. If of sufficient severity, this may cause a virtual melt down of osseous tissue. [Pg.331]

Effervescent tablets were produced using four different formulations that contained citric and/or tartaric acid and NaHCOs with polyvidone and PEG 6000. The adhesion of each formulation to the metal faces of the punch tips was determined by means of electron microscopy, surface-roughness measurements, and quantification of punch-weight variations during tablet production. The basic formulations were inherently adhesive and produced tablets with a weak, porous structure the tablets were rougher than conventional, non-effervescent compressed tablets. Both formulations that contained tartaric acid produced tablets with a lower surface roughness and had less... [Pg.1462]
