A sequence of tasks which combine the use of people, machines, methods, tools, environment, instrumentation, and materials to convert given inputs into outputs of added value.

For many years, pressurized steam(autoclaving) at 120 °C for 30 minutes has been the basic method for sterilizing instruments and decontaminating materials. When autoclaving is not possible, as is the case with lensed instruments and materials containing plastic and rubber, ethylene oxide— diluted with either fluorocarbon or carbon dioxide to diminish explosive hazard—was used at 440-1200 mg/L at 45-60 °C with 30-60% relative humidity. The higher concentrations have been used to increase penetration. 

It is not easy to develop a recommended analytical procedure that all laboratories can accept, as a large number of various analytical procedures have been developed and published by many scientists and analytical procedures are being continually improved with upgrading of the instruments and materials for measurement of radionuclides. Understandably, most laboratories prefer to retain analytical procedures which they have used for long time and which have been proved to be reliable, unless there is a strong reason to make a change. 

General Procedure of the Electropolymerization (EP) Experiments. Electrodes were Teflon-shrouded platinum disks (Engelhard) of known area. Otherwise, the electrochemical instrumentation and materials are identical to those described in the chloride-loss section.

Instruments and Materials. The silicon wafers were obtained from Wafemet Incorporated. Si (100) surfaces were used in these studies and the wafers were p-type silicon with tolerances and specifications as per SEMI Standard M1.1.STD.5 cut to the approximate dimensions 10 x 12 mm as needed. The substrates used for PZT deposition were Si(l 11) wafers coated with 1000 A of titanium and 2000 A of Pt(l 11). These wafers were prepared and donated by Northern Telecom Canada. 

Certain commercial equipment, instruments and materials are identified in this paper in order to specify adequately the experimental procedure. In no case does such identification imply recommendation or endorsement by NIST, nor does it imply that the material or equipment is necessarily the best available for that purpose. 

The unit operations found in each area are discussed, covering control system design, instrument selection, and materials of construction. It is obvious that control systems engineers will have different opinions as to what controls, instruments, and materials are the best to be used for any application. The selections here emphasize simplicity of design and the use of quality equipment and materials of construction. This philosophy does not result in the lowest initial cost, but it has produced plants that are easy to start up and operate, with high onstream factors and long lives.
