Polyurethane surface coatings

Polyurethane surface coatings are used in wood varnishes and quick drying enamels. Electrical wires coated with polyurethane can be soldered without removing the polymer coating. [Pg.204]

One-pack or two-pack polyurethane surface coatings, which may sometimes be combined with acrylic resin systems. The one-pack system, which has a long shelf life, is an adduct of resin with polyisocyanate dissolved in a moisture-free solvent. When applied to a surface the film cures and hardens, as moisture in the air reacts with the isocyanate groups in the resin. The two-pack system consists of a polyisocyanate (frequently derived from an aliphatic isocyanate monomer) and a polyol as separate components. Once the two components are mixed, the shelf life is very limited. [Pg.418]

Braatz et al.- studied the adsorption of proteins on polyurethane surfaces. They coated silica and silicone tubing with a variety of chemistries. Although they found differences, the polyuretlianes demonstrated minimal protein adsorption given sufficient coating thickness. Abstract— The use of organosilanes as adhesion promoters for surface coatings, adhesives and syntactic foams is described and reviewed in the light of published work. Data are presented on the beneficial effect of silanes, when used as pretreatment primers and additives, on the bond strength of two pack epoxide and polyurethane paints applied to aluminium and mild steel. It is shown that silanes when used as additives to structural epoxide and polyurethane adhesives are less effective than when used as pretreatment primers on metals but are highly effective on glass substrates. The compressive properties of glass microballoon/epoxide syntactic foams are shown to be markedly improved by the addition of silanes. [Pg.21]

Isocyanates (RNCO) are industrially relevant compounds which find application in several fields [9, 106]. Many isocyanates serve as the starting materials for the manufacture of plant protection agents, pesticides, dyes, resins and plastics, textile waterproofing agents, detergents, bleaches, and adhesives. They are also widely used in surface coatings such as paints, sealants and finishes, and in the manufacture of rubbery plastics such as those used to coat wires. Removal of the article from the mold is lengthy process because anti-adhesive lubricants have to be sprayed on the on a mold surface before every injection, in an operation that takes up to 25 - 30% of the full cycle. In reactive molding of polyurethane-based compounds, internal lubricants are used in combination with surface coatings. Polyurethanes with antistatic properties are suitable for use where static electrical charges must be dissipated. Polymers Unsaturated fatty-acid chains offer opportunities for polymerisation that can be exploited to develop uses in surface coatings and plastics manufacturing.
