The film is fibrillated mechanically by mbbing or bmshing. Immiscible polymers, such as polyethylene or polystyrene (PS), may be added to polypropylene to promote fibrillation. Many common fiber-texturing techniques such as stuffer-box, false-twist, or knife-edge treatments improve the textile characteristics of slit-film fibers. [Pg.320]

Pulp-like olefin fibers are produced by a high pressure spurting process developed by Hercules Inc. and Solvay, Inc. Polypropylene or polyethylene is dissolved in volatile solvents at high temperature and pressure. After the solution is released, the solvent is volatilised, and the polymer expands into a highly fluffed, pulp-like product. Additives are included to modify the surface characteristics of the pulp. Uses include felted fabrics, substitution in whole or in part for wood pulp in papermaking, and replacement of asbestos in reinforcing appHcations (56). [Pg.320]

Fabric Composition. The method of fabric manufacture dictates many of the characteristics of the sheet, but intrinsic properties are firmly estabhshed by the base polymer selected. Properties such as fiber density, temperature resistance, chemical and light stabiUty, ease of coloration, surface energies, and others are a function of the base polymer. Thus, because nylon absorbs more moisture than polypropylene, spunbonded fabrics made from nylon are more water absorbent than fabrics of polypropylene. [Pg.163]

The majority of spunbonded fabrics are based on isotactic polypropylene and polyester (Table 1). Small quantities are made from nylon-6,6 and a growing percentage from high density polyethylene. Table 3 illustrates the basic characteristics of fibers made from different base polymers. Although some interest has been seen in the use of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) as a base polymer, largely because of potential increases in the softness of the final fabric (9), economic factors continue to favor polypropylene (see OlefinPOLYMERS, POLYPROPYLENE). [Pg.163]

Polyethylene. Traditional melt spun methods have not utilized polyethylene as the base polymer because the physical properties obtained have been lower compared to those obtained with polypropylene. Advances in polyethylene technology may result in the commercialization of new spunbonded stmctures having characteristics not attainable with polypropylene. Although fiber-grade polyethylene resin was announced in late 1986 (11,12), it has seen limited acceptance because of higher costs and continuing improvements in polypropylene resin technology (see Olefin POLYMERS, POLYETHYLENE). [Pg.163]

Polypropylene molecules repeatedly fold upon themselves to form lamellae, the sizes of which ate a function of the crystallisa tion conditions. Higher degrees of order are obtained upon formation of crystalline aggregates, or spheruHtes. The presence of a central crystallisation nucleus from which the lamellae radiate is clearly evident in these stmctures. Observations using cross-polarized light illustrates the characteristic Maltese cross model (Fig. 2b). The optical and mechanical properties ate a function of the size and number of spheruHtes and can be modified by nucleating agents. Polypropylene. PP is a versatile polymer, use of which continues to grow rapidly because of its excellent performance characteristics and improvements in its production economics, eg, through new high efficiency catalysts for gas-phase processes. New PP-blend formulations exhibit improved toughness, particularly at low temperatures. PP has been blended mechanically with various elastomers from a time early in its commercialisation to reduce low temperature brittleness. [Pg.421]

Foi example, nylon pile fabrics, exhibiting higher moisture regain, have different traction characteristics under wet and dry conditions than do polypropylene-based materials. PL can be used as a sensitive probe of oxidative photodegradation in polymers. After exposure to UV irradiation, materials such as polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, and PTFE exhibit PL emission characteristic of oxidation products in these hosts. One unfortunate characteristic property of polypropylene is the dominating transition point which occurs at about 0°C with the result that the polymer becomes brittle as this temperature is approached. Even at room temperature the impact strength of some grades leaves something to be desired. Products of improved strength and lower brittle points may be obtained by block copolymerisation of propylene with small amounts (4-15%) of ethylene. Such materials are widely used (known variously as polyallomers or just as propylene copolymers) and are often preferred to the homopolymer in injection moulding and bottle blowing applications. [Pg.253]

The next major commodity plastic worth discussing is polypropylene. Polypropylene is a thermoplastic, crystalline resin. Its production technology is based on Ziegler s discovery in 1953 of metal alkyl-transition metal halide olefin polymerization catalysts. These are heterogeneous coordination systems that produce resin by stereo specific polymerization of propylene. Stereoregular polymers characteristically have monomeric units arranged in orderly periodic steric configuration. [Pg.237]

From the viewpoint of accommodation to the filter-supporting structure, some cloths cannot be used, even though the filtering characteristics are excellent. For rotary drum filters, for example, the cloth is pressed onto the drum by the caulking method, which uses cords that pass over the drum. In this case, the closely woven cloths manufactured from monofilament polyethylene or polypropylene fiber are less desirable than more flexible cloths of polyfilament fibers or staple cloths. [Pg.151]

Articles made from polypropylene have good electrical and chemical resistance and low water absorption. Its other useful characteristics are its light weight (lowest thermoplastic polymer density), high abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, high impact strength, and no toxicity.
