Functional groups hydrogenation

Carbon Cha.in Backbone Polymers. These polymers may be represented by (4) and considered derivatives of polyethylene, where n is the degree of polymeriza tion and R is (an alkyl group or) a functional group hydrogen (polyethylene), methyl (polypropylene), carboxyl (poly(acryhc acid)), chlorine (poly(vinyl chloride)), phenyl (polystyrene) hydroxyl (poly(vinyl alcohol)), ester (poly(vinyl acetate)), nitrile (polyacrylonitrile), vinyl (polybutadiene), etc. The functional groups and the molecular weight of the polymers, control thek properties which vary in hydrophobicity, solubiUty characteristics, glass-transition temperature, and crystallinity. 

Finally, since besides the inductive effect of the sulfoxide and the sulfone functional groups, hydrogen bonding, field effects and steric effects to solvation may or may not work in the same direction, the pKx values can be useful in assigning configurations of suitable pairs of stereoisomeric sulfoxide and sulfone carboxylic acids291. 

In addition, polar functional groups hydrogen bond with each other (not just water), and amino acids with charged side chains like - COO and - NH3 can stabilize tertiary structure by electrostatic interactions. 

Unless it is a part of a functional group, hydrogen is not shown in a skeletal structure. In the sample, the hydrogens shown are part of the alcohol functional group. The other hydrogen atoms bonded to carbon are not shown. 

Glycine has the smallest functional group (hydrogen) of any of the ot amino acids.
