Iu search for efficieut aud greeuer processes over the past few years various heterogeneous catalysts such as titanium incorporated mesoporous molecular sieves [45,46], Schiff-base complexes supported on zeolite [47] and Zn(II)-Al(III) layered double hydroxide (LDH) [48], oxomolybdenum(VI) complexes supported on MCM-41 and MCM-48 [49], polyoxometallate supported materials [50], Co and Mn-AlPO s [51] etc. have been developed and studied for the catalytic epoxidatiou of a-pinene. Many of these processes suffer from drawbacks and limited applicability due to the poor conversion and also the selectivities. Sacrificial aldehydes are often used as an oxygen acceptor in such processes to achieve reasonable yield and selectivities but, this procedure leads to an increase in the E-factors and decrease in the atom economy [51].

Ying Lu received a Ph.D degree from Northeast Normal University in 2005 under the supervision of Professor Enbo Wang. From 2006 to 2008 she worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Ulm with Professor Dirk Volkmer. Currently she is an Associate Professor in Northeast Normal University. Her research is focused on the synthesis, structure and characterization of polyoxometalate-based organic-inorganic hybrid materials. 

Polyoxometalates and their derivatives can be amalgamated with a variety of ligands. An impressive array of vanadium-oxide-phosphate based materials with new electronic and structural properties has been prepared by combining the tetrahedral PO4 ligand with oxovanadate moieties. Some of these materials have open-framework containing very large cavities and channels similar to those observed in conventional aluminosilicate-based zeolites . 

Polyoxometalates can be versatile inorganic building blocks for construction of molecular-based materials. The use of polyoxometalates, in combination with inorganic or organic components has been realized in the construction of molecule-hased materials. Prominent examples of inorganic materials can he found in the work by Muller on giant molybdates.We have been interested in materials comprised of lanthanide polyoxoanion building blocks. The anionic polyoxometalates comprise a much larger class of metal oxide-based pillaring agents (18). It was proposed that hydrotaldtes (also referred to as layered double hydroxides, or LDHs) would be suitable host materials for pillaring with polyoxometalates.
