The use of synthetic polymers in building and construction is also increasing at a rapid rate. Flooring is a mixture of wood, synthetic and clad wood, carpet, and tile, all polymeric. While carpets were once derived from natural materials such as cotton and wool, today almost all of them are derived from synthetic polymers and include nylon, polyester, olefins, and polyacrylonitrile. [Pg.611]

Polymer Production. Three processes are used to produce nylon-6,6. Two of these start with nylon-6,6 salt, a combination of adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine in water they are the batch or autoclave process and the continuous polymerisation process. The third, the soHd-phase polymerisation process, starts with low molecular weight pellets usually made via the autoclave process, and continues to build the molecular weight of the polymer in a heated inert gas, the temperature of which never reaches the melting point of the polymer. [Pg.233]

A melamine laminating resin used to saturate the print and overlay papers of a typical decorative laminate might contain two moles of formaldehyde for each mole of melamine. In order to inhibit crystallization of methylo1 melamines, the reaction is continued until about one-fourth of the reaction product has been converted to low molecular weight polymer. A simple deterrnination of free formaldehyde may be used to foUow the first stage of the reaction, and the build-up of polymer in the reaction mixture may be followed by cloud-point dilution or viscosity tests. [Pg.326]

Polystyrene. Polystyrene [9003-53-6] is a thermoplastic prepared by the polymerization of styrene, primarily the suspension or bulk processes. Polystyrene is a linear polymer that is atactic, amorphous, inert to acids and alkahes, but attacked by aromatic solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dry cleaning fluids. It is clear but yellows and crazes on outdoor exposure when attacked by uv light. It is britde and does not accept plasticizers, though mbber can be compounded with it to raise the impact strength, ie, high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Its principal use in building products is as a foamed plastic (see Eoamed plastics). The foams are used for interior trim, door and window frames, cabinetry, and, in the low density expanded form, for insulation (see Styrene plastics). [Pg.327]

Polymethacrylates. Poly(methyl methacrylate) [9011-14-7] is a thermoplastic. Itis the acryUc resin most used in building products, frequendy as a blend or copolymer with other materials to improve its properties. The monomer is polymerized either by bulk or suspension processes. Eor glazing material, its greatest use, only the bulk process is used. Sheets are prepared either by casting between glass plates or by extmsion of pellets through a sHt die. This second method is less expensive and more commonly used. Peroxide or azo initiators are used for the polymerization (see Methacrylic polymers). [Pg.327]

Polyurethane foams are generally made using a polyalcohol rather than a diol as the monomer, so the polymer has a high amount of three-dimensional cross-linking. The result is a rigid but very light foam suitable for use as thermal insulation in building construction and portable ice chests. [Pg.1214]

Polyurethane foams are widely used. Rigid foams, for example, are used in cavity wall insulation in buildings, while flexible foams have, until recently, been used in soft furnishing for domestic use. They continue to be used in car seating. In addition to foams another major use of polyurethanes is in surface coatings. A variety of polyurethane-based polymers, some of considerable complexity, are used for this purpose, but all share the common desirable features of toughness, flexibility, and abrasion resistance. [Pg.63]
