For specific polymers, halogen-free and phosphorus-free plasticizers can reduce the oxygen index. The transparency can be altered if the compatibility is low and/or the refractive index is inadequate.

Polymer halogenation is of great practical interest because it permits the modification of the phyrical properties of the oripnal polymer and also its chemical behavior, for instance during cross-linking processes. 

Grafting from, exploits the active sites, which exist or can easily be generated on a polymer. Halogenated polymers are most frequently used for this purpose poly(vinyl) chloride), polychloroprene, chlorinated EPDM, chlorobutyl rubber, bromobutyl rubber, chlorinated polybutadiene, chlorinated butadiene-styrene copolymers etc.145).
