Hydroxides. Thorium (TV) is generally less resistant to hydrolysis than similarly sized lanthanides, and more resistant to hydrolysis than tetravalent ions of other early actinides, eg, U, Np, and Pu. Many of the thorium(IV) hydrolysis studies indicate stepwise hydrolysis to yield monomeric products of formula Th(OH) , where n is integral between 1 and 4, in addition to a number of polymeric species (40—43). More recent potentiometric titration studies indicate that only two of the monomeric species, Th(OH) " and thorium hydroxide [13825-36-0], Th(OH)4, are important in dilute (<10 M Th) solutions (43). However, in a Th02 [1314-20-1] solubiUty study, the best fit to the experimental data required inclusion of the species. Th(OH) 2 (44). In more concentrated (>10 Af) solutions, polynuclear species have been shown to exist. Eor example, a more recent model includes the dimers Th2(OH) " 2 the tetramers Th4(OH) " g and Th4(OH) 2 two hexamers, Th2(OH) " 4 and Th2(OH) " 2 (43). [Pg.38]

Polymerization methods [I], [II], and [III] (Fig. 1) indicate, respectively, the dropwise addition of VAc and initiator the dropwise addition of VAc and the stepwise addition of initiator the batch method, in which all ingredients of water, VAc, PVA, and initiator were put into the reaction vessel before starting polymerization. The SCB distribution (SCBD) has been extensively studied by fractionation based on compositional difference as well as molecular size. The analysis by cross fractionation, which involves stepwise separation of the molecules on the basis of composition and molecular size, has provided information of inter- and intramolecular SCBD in much detail. The temperature-rising elution fractionation (TREE) method, which separates polymer molecules according to their composition, has been used for HP LDPE it has been found that SCB composition is more or less uniform [24,25]. It can be observed from the appearance of only one melt endotherm peak in the analysis by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) (Fig. 1) [26]. Wild et al. [27] reported that HP LDPE prepared by tubular reactor exhibits broader SCBD than that prepared by an autoclave reactor. The SCBD can also be varied by changing the polymerization conditions. From the cross fractionation of commercial HP LDPE samples, it has been found that low-MW species generally have more SCBs [13,24]. [Pg.278]

Reaction Mechanism. The reaction mechanism of the anionic-solution polymerization of styrene monomer using n-butyllithium initiator has been the subject of considerable experimental and theoretical investigation (1-8). The polymerization process occurs as the alkyllithium attacks monomeric styrene to initiate active species, which, in turn, grow by a stepwise propagation reaction. This polymerization reaction is characterized by the production of straight chain active polymer molecules ("living" polymer) without termination, branching, or transfer reactions. [Pg.296]

The product in the above example possesses the same chain structure as polyethylene. The polymerization process, notwithstanding the likelihood of a metal alkyl intermediate, should conform satisfactorily to stepwise condensation. Burgmayer and Murray [40] reported electrically controlled resistance to the transport of ions across polypyrrole membrane. The membrane was formed around a folded minigrid sheet by the anodic polymerization of pyrrole. The ionic resistance, measured by impedance, in 1.0 M aqueous KC1 solution was much higher under the neutral (reduced) state of the polymers than under the positively charged (oxidized) state. The redox state of polypyrrole was electrochemically controlled this phenomenon was termed an ion gate, since the resistance was varied from low to high and vice versa by stepwise voltage application. [Pg.577]

The electrochemistry of Ti2+ in 66.7 m/o AlCl3-NaCl has been investigated wherein the electroactive Ti2+ was prepared by the oxidation of Ti metal with liquid A1C13 [176, 185] and by the electrochemical dissolution of titanium metal [120, 177], The authors of both studies concluded that Ti2+ may be oxidized stepwise to Ti3+ and Ti4+ and that both processes are reversible at platinum and tungsten electrodes. However, anomalous voltammetric behavior at high Ti2+ concentrations (greater than 50 mmol L ) suggests the formation of polymeric Ti2+ species in the melt. The reduction of Ti2+ to the metal was not observed at potentials more positive than that required for aluminum deposition. [Pg.330]
