Polymer studies alkanes

PH As are a family of linear polyesters of 3, 4, 5, and 6-hydroxyacids, synthesized by a wide variety of bacteria through the fermentation of sugars, hpids, alkanes, alkenes, and aUsanoic acids. They are recyclable, natural materials, and can be easily degraded to carbon dioxide and water. This makes them as excellent replacements for petroleum-derived plastics in terms of processability, physical characteristics, and biodegradability. In addition, these polymers are biocompatible and hence have several medical applications [238], leading to vast interest in PHAs in bionanocomposites as well. The main polymers studied are poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), PHB and poly(hydroxybutyrate-cohydroxyvalerate). [Pg.399]

The expense is justified, however, when tackling polymer chains, where reconstruction of an entire chain is expressed as a succession of atomic moves of this kind [121]. The first atom is placed at random the second selected nearby (one bond length away), the third placed near the second, and so on. Each placement of an atom is given a greater chance of success by selecting from multiple locations, as just described. Biasing factors are calculated for the whole multi-atom move, forward and reverse, and used as before in the Metropolis prescription. For fiirther details see [122, 123. 124. 125]. The first case concerns particles with polymer chains attached to their surfaces. This can be done using chemically (end-)grafted chains, as is often done in the study of model colloids. Alternatively, a block copolymer can be used, of which one of the blocks (the anchor group) adsorbs strongly to the particles. In simulations of polymer solutions of alkanes, however, it only slightly affects the static ensemble properties even at high temperatures [21]. The effect of different backbones on ero.sion rates was demonstrated in a study of the homologous poly[ (p-carboxyphenoxy)alkane] series. As the number of methylene groups in the backbone increased from 1 to 6, thus decreasing the reactivity of the anhydride linkage and rendering the polymer more hydrophobic, the erosion rates underwent a decrease of three orders of magnitude (4). [Pg.47]

Grant and Paul Chemical Shifts. The technique of obtaining branch content information from NMR for polymers utilizes an empirical relationship given by Grant and Paul [29,79,80]. The Grant and Paul empirical relationship [29,79,80] can be used to calculate the values of the chemical shifts for carbon atoms in the vicinity of a branch point in a hydrocarbon polymer. The empirical relationship was obtained from NMR studies on alkanes. The chemical shift of any carbon atom in a 13C-NMR can be decomposed as a sum of contributions from its nearest five neighboring carbon atoms. LAJs incorporating polymer films on top of the organic SAMs showed that these junctions allow for studying the correlation between electrical properties and chemical structure. Both de Boer et al. [80] (Fig. 7) and Rampi et al. [79], by spin-coating respectively PEDOT PSS and PPV on top of alkane SAMs, extracted from the electrical measurement [i = 0.57 A-1 and [j = 0.90 A-1. The homogeneous nucleation phenomenon was first studied by droplet crystallization experiments performed on metals [57-60], alkanes [61] and polymers [62-66] when dispersed in inert low molecular weight media. The idea was that when the polymer in the bulk is subdivided into a number of droplets that is larger than the number of active heterogeneities present in the polymer, there should be a certain number of droplets without any active heterogeneity. [Pg.23]

The micellization behavior of copolymers containing two hydrophobic blocks, or double-hydrophobic block copolymers, has been shown to be mainly controlled by the solvent and its interaction with the copolymer blocks. It is thus possible to tune the micellization of these copolymers by changing the organic solvent. In this respect, large differences in Z, i h, Rc, etc. are expected whenever the interaction parameter between the polymer and the solvent is varied. This is illustrated by, e.g., the work of Pit-sikalis et al. [87] for PS-PSMA diblock copolymers dissolved in either ethyl-or methylacetate. The effect of temperature has been studied by Quintana et al. [88,89], who have clearly shown that CMC decreases with increasing temperature for PS-PEB copolymers in alkanes. [Pg.97]

Nonpolar Systems. Most of the early theoretical studies on radiation action were carried out on water and aqueous solutions. This was a consequence not only of Its Importance In radiation biology but also of the greater amount of experimental data and the simplicity of Its radiation chemical reactions as compared with organic systems. Recently, however, more studies on non-polar systems such as alkanes have appeared (24). It Is a long step to solid polymers but methods are being continually refined. [Pg.19]

We have studied the alkane and alkene yields from the radiolysis of copolymers of ethylene with small amounts of propylene, butene and hexene. These are examples of linear low density polyethenes (LLDPE) and models for LDPE. Alkanes from Ct to C6 are readily observed after irradiation of all the polymers in vacuum. The distribution of alkanes shows a maximum corresponding to elimination of the short-chain branch. This is illustrated in Figure 8 for the irradiation of poly (ethylene-co-1-butene) containing 0.5 branches per 1,000 carbon atoms at 20 C. [Pg.140]
