Sassoon and Rabani [79] also prepared a two polymer system in which a chromophore was covalently bound to one polyelectrolyte and a donor or acceptor was electrostatically held by the other polyelectrolyte, and showed that its back ET underwent a similar retardation effect. They employed 26 as a photosensitizer, MV2+ as a mediator, and ferricyanide as an acceptor electrostatically bound to the added polycation (polybrene). 

Polymeric polyamines are also strongly adsorbed in the compact region of the electric double layer as a combination of multisite electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. The adsorption results in masking the silanol groups and the other adsorption active sites on the capillary wall and in altering the EOF, which is lowered and in most cases reversed from cathodic to anodic. One of the most widely employed polyamine coating agents is polybrene (or hexadimetrine bromide), a linear hydrophobic polyquaternary amine polymer of the ionene type [129]. 

Cationic polymers such as polybrene and diethylaminoethyldextran (DEAE-dextran) have been used for transfection of genes into cultured cell. However, these polymers cannot be used for in vivo application due to their poor transfection efficiency and high cytotoxicity.

Similar delivery systems have been designed using other cationic polymers, including lipopolyamines (161), amphipathic peptides (162), polylysine lipids (163), cholesterol (164), quaternary ammonium detergents (165), polyamidoamines called dendrimers, polyethylenimines or chitosan, diethylaminoethyl dextran (DEAE dextran), and polybrene. 

The stability of the resulting complexes depends on the polymer,as shown by desorption by polybrene. From competition experiments between heparin and polymers, it is proposed that the T-AT desorption parallels the anticoagulant activity of the polymers.

Cordova et al. explored the CE behavior of protein charge ladders obtained by acetylation of lysozyme and carbonic anhydrase II using noncovalent polycationic coated capillaries. Two of them, polyethylenimine and Polybrene, were very effective in preventing the adsorption of positively charged proteins. Conditions used were fused-silica capillary (50 p.m i.d. x 38 cm) coated with the polymer by flushing the capillary with a 7.5% (w/v) polymer solution, prepared in 25 mM Tris-192 mM Gly buffer (pH 8.3), for 15 min. The running buffer was 25 mM Tris-192 mM Gly buffer (pH 8.3) in the absence of polymer. Separations were obtained within 5 min. 

Dimethyl-l,5-diazaundecamethylene polymethobromide (Hexadimethrene, Polybrene) [28728-55-4] M 5000—10,000 polymer. Purify it by chromatography on Dowex 50 and/or by filtration through alumina before use [Frank Hoppe-Seyler s Z Physiol Chemie 360 997 1979]. It is hygroscopic, and its solubility in H2O is 10"/o. 

In contrast, thrombin does not compete with albumin but is quantitatively desorbed by polybrene. Moreover the quantities of thrombin adsorbed at saturation on both polymers are in the same ratio as the total negative charges borne by the polymers backbones. These results suggest that the protease interacts with the sulfonate and carboxyl functions which are nearly equivalent with respect to this interaction. This conclusion is consistent with the fact that thrombin adsorption obeys the Langmuir isotherm which means that the polymer surface is homogeneous and the heat of adsorption is independent of the surface coverage.
