Polymers hydrophilicity

Hydrogels are water-containing polymers, hydrophilic in nature, yet insoluble. In water, these polymers swell to an equiUbrium volume and maintain thek shape. The hydrophilicity of hydrogel is a result of the presence of functional groups such as —NH2, —OH, —COOH, —CONH2, —CONH—, —SO H, etc. The insolubihty and stabiUty of hydrogels are caused by the presence of a three-dimensional network. The scope, preparation, and characterization of hydrogels has been reviewed (107). [Pg.103]

Blending of polymers provides a convenient way of combining the different properties of individual polymers. Hydrophilization of the silicone mbber can be obtained by blending silicone rubber with hydrogels. These kinds of composites combine the good mechanical properties with the hydrophilicity. [Pg.245]

Polymer hydrophilicity can be judged in the cases (a), (c), or (d) of Fig. 14.1. It is defined as the affinity of a polymer for water, which can be quantified by the equilibrium mass gain, W, determined in standard conditions, e.g., in a saturated atmosphere from a sorption experiment. depends on the vapor pressure or activity of water and on the temperature. It varies, typically from 0 to 10% in most networks. [Pg.434]

The hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity balance of the membrane polymer is another important parameter that is mainly influenced by the functional groups of the polymer. Hydrophilic polymers have high affinity to water, and therefore they are suited as a material for nonporous membranes that should have a high permeability and selectivity for water (e.g., in RO or hydrophilic PV). In addition, hydrophilic membranes have been proven to be les s prone to fouling in aqueous systems than hydrophobic materials. [Pg.23]

Dr. Riew has presented more than 50 technical papers and holds more than 25 patents on emulsion polymers, hydrophilic polymers, synthesis and application of telechelic polymers, and toughened plastics for adhesives and composites. His latest research is in the synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation of impact modifiers for thermosets and engineering thermoplastics. His research interests include correlating polymer chemistry and physics, morphology, engineering, and static and dynamic thermomechanical properties to the failure mechanisms of toughened plastics. [Pg.7]
