The most widespread polymer currently in use for high-speed dynamic sealing applications in automotives is polyetheretherketone. These thermoplastic aromatic polymers are used in the aerospace, electronics, and nuclear industries [9], These materials have excellent mechanical- and chemical-resistance properties, which permit polyethere-therketones to be used in many engineering applications—often in harsh environments [10], These polyetheretherketones are the product of the reaction of 1,4-dihydroxyben-zene and 4,4 -di II non then /ophenonc [8]. Figure 6.5 shows this reaction. 

Polyetherethereketone Fiber (PEEK) n A manufactured fiber from polyetheretherketone polymer with high temperature and chemical resistance used in composites as a matrix material and in other industrial applications. 

Solvay s Amodel PPA resin features an excellent stil3iiess-to-cost ratio and a high strength-to-weight ratio, both of which are superior relative to PBT, PPS, PEI, PET and PA 6,6. Its thermal performance is exceeded only by polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and some LCPs its warpage and dimensional stability match PPS. Amodel resin has lower moisture absorption than PA 6,6, and its broad chemical resistance is exceeded only by a handful of more costly speciality polymers. 

The properties described hereafter are, unless otherwise specified, those of the polyetheretherketones. PEK are characterized by a highly crystalline character, a better heat resistance and a better chemical behaviour.

Polyetherketone n An advanced thermoplastic resin having both ether and ketone linkages in its chains, a close relative of Polyetheretherketone, above, and having the PEEK structure with the leftmost phenyl and ether oxygen deleted. This melt-processable polymer melts near 365°C, is fire-resistant, has good resistance to chemicals, and can be used at temperatures comparable to those for PEEK.
