Ethylene glycol (ETH-uh-leen GLYE-kol) is clear, colorless, syrupy liquid with a sweet taste. One should not attempt to confirm the compound s taste, however, as it is toxic. In recent years, more than 4 billion kilograms (9 billion pounds) of ethylene glycol has been produced in the United States annually. Polyester elastomer is soluble in cresol, concentrated sulfuric acid, and trifluo-roacetic acid. Specific gravity ranges from 1.17 to 1.25. The elastomer burns very slowly with a yellow flame with blue tip. It gives off sooty smoke and a sweet characteristic odor. Infrared spectroscopy and DSC are preferred method for positive identification of the elastomer.
