Polyester sweet

HOCHj CHjOH. Colourless, odourless, rather viscous hygroscopic liquid having a sweet taste, b.p. 197 C. Manufactured from ethylene chlorohydrin and NaHC03 solution, or by the hydration of ethylene oxide with dilute sulphuric acid or water under pressure at 195°C. Used in anti-freezes and coolants for engines (50 %) and in manufacture of polyester fibres (e.g. Terylene) and in the manufacture of various esters used as plasticizers. U.S. production 1979 1 900 000 tonnes. [Pg.139]

Ethylene glycol (ETH-uh-leen GLYE-kol) is clear, colorless, syrupy liquid with a sweet taste. One should not attempt to confirm the compound s taste, however, as it is toxic. In recent years, more than 4 billion kilograms (9 billion pounds) of ethylene glycol has been produced in the United States annually. The compound is used primarily as an antifreeze and in the manufacture of a number of important chemical compounds, including polyester fibers, films, bottles, resins, and other materials. [Pg.313]

Numerous studies on polyester melting have been published (230 to 236). More recent reports can be found in papers by Hobbs and Bill-meyer (237), Miyagi and Wunderlich (183), and Sweet and Bell (238), Roberts (239), Ikeda (240) and Holdsworth and Turner-Jones (241). [Pg.74]

Ethylene glycol is used as an automobile antifreeze and in the manufacture of polyester fibers. The name glycol stems from the sweet taste of this poisonous compound. Combustion of 6.38 mg of ethylene glycol gives 9.06 mg CO2 and 5.58 mg H2O. The compound contains only C, H, and O. What are the mass percentages of the elements in ethylene glycol ... [Pg.117]

Ethylene glycol is a liquid prepared from ethylene and is used as an antilieeze agent. It is also used in the manufacture of polyester plastics and fibers. Glycerol is a nontoxic, sweet-tasting liquid obtained from fats during the making of soap. It is used in foods and candies to keep them soft and moist. [Pg.1024]

Polyester elastomer is soluble in cresol, concentrated sulfuric acid, and trifluo-roacetic acid. Specific gravity ranges from 1.17 to 1.25. The elastomer burns very slowly with a yellow flame with blue tip. It gives off sooty smoke and a sweet characteristic odor. Infrared spectroscopy and DSC are preferred method for positive identification of the elastomer. [Pg.306]
