The polymer can be spun into an elastic yam of very fine denier. It is also claimed to exhibit good mechanical properties for molding and compares favorably with commercial polyesters and nylons. Also, polycaprolactone was reported to be used in some medical applications in biodegradable surgical sutures and postoperative support pins and splints. Similar uses are also found for two other polyesters, poly (lactic acid) and poly(glycolic acid). The two polymers form from their cyclic dimers by cationic ring-opening polymerizations with the aid of Lewis acids ... [Pg.300]

Due to the brittleness of starch materials, plasticizers are commonly used. A frequently utilized low weight hydroxyl compoxmd is glycerol. Another effective plasticizer is water, although not the best because it evaporates easily. Still, starch-based materials readily absorb water and this may result in significant changes in the mechanical properties. Different routes have been explored in order to improve the mechanical properties and water resistance of starch materials. These are chemical modifications to the starch molecule, blends with polymers such as polycaprolactone [61], or reinforcement with different types of cellulose-based fillers, such as ramie crystaUites [62], and timicin whiskers [63], or montmorillonite clay particles [64]. [Pg.128]

To improve processability, mechanical properties and moisture resistance while maintaining biodegradability, starch may be mixed with aliphatic or aliphatic-aromatic polyesters, such as polycaprolactone (PCL), polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), suffering complexing with these pol)miers [33,35]. [Pg.14]

When the properties of H12MDI elastomers are compared with those of the analogous MDI series it is found that elastomers based on the aliphatic isocyanate generally had superior mechanical properties. This pattern of behaviour applies to both polyester, polyether, polycaprolactone and polybutadiene polyol-based urethane elastomers. [Pg.59]

Numerous other papers and patents have been published regarding the polymerization and physical properties of polycaprolactone (Pitt Schindler, 1983a Schindler, et al, 1977 Erode Koleske, 1973 Schindler, et al, 1982 Hostettler, et al, 1966). A comparison of the various physico-mechanical properties of a number of biodegradable polymers was published by Engelberg and Kohn (1991). [Pg.79]
