Results of the maltose hydrate adhesion on original PC and PC-EB teeth after 50 days of storage in a saliva model solution at 37°C are shown in Table 12.3. The content of adhesion decreases with a dose of EB irradiation, but the decay saturates at higher doses. For reference, the adhesion on polyamide (PA nylon) is higher than PC. In the mouth, maltose is formed by enzyme affection... [Pg.330]

Blends of PPO and polyamide (PA, nylon) are incompatible but good properties can be obtained through the use of compatibilizing agents. The PPO is dispersed in a continuous nylon matrix in these blends. Because of the incompatibility of the two phases, the modulus decreases very little at the Tg of PA (71°C) and is maintained up to the Tg of the PPO phase (208°C). [Pg.507]

Polymers may react with different organic or inorganic solvents. Generally, polar solvents may permeate polar polymers and nonpolar solvents nonpolar polymers. For example, pmma has a limited solubility for alcohol and polyamide (pA, nylon) for water. [Pg.292]

Blends of two immiscible polymers are created to yield a material with properties that could not be obtained otherwise. Each component of the blend overcomes the property deficiencies of the other component of the blend. In the case of syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS)/polyamide (PA nylon) blends, the blends have improved strength, ductility, and creep versus SPS formulations, and the blends have improved dimensional stability and flow versus nylon compounds. Other attributes of the SPS/nylon blends are low specific gravity (lower weight parts), high thermal diffusivity (low cycle time), excellent electrical properties, good chemical resistance, and excellent United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) electric wiring components test performance. In this chapter, the composition, properties, and applications for SPS/ nylon blends will be reviewed. [Pg.338]

Nylon (Polyamide) PA is a crystalline plastic and the first and largest consumption of the engineering thermoplastic. This family of TPs are tough, slippery, with good electrical properties, but hygroscopic and with dimensional stability lower than most other engineering types. Also offered in reinforced and filled grades as a moderately priced metal replacement. [Pg.427]

Engineering polymers are often used as a replacement for wood and metals. Examples include polyamides (PA), often called nylons, polyesters (saturated and unsaturated), aromatic polycarbonates (PCs), polyoxymethylenes (POMs), polyacrylates, polyphenylene oxide (PPO), styrene copolymers, e.g., styrene/ acrylonitrile (SAN) and acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS). Many of these polymers are produced as copolymers or used as blends and are each manufactured worldwide on the 1 million tonne scale. [Pg.66]

Polyamide-66 (PA66) is a semi-erystalline polymer (poly(hexamethylene adipamide)) synthesized by the polyeondensation of diamine and diaeid. The numbers 66 indicate how many (—CH2—) units occur in the diaeid and the diamine groups. Polyamide (PA) is a well-known material with different commereial names, e.g. Nylon by DuPont, Stanyl by DSM, etc. Polyamides are complex engineering polymers used for a wide range of industrial applications in bulk and fibrous forms. PA66 fibers are used in the moorings of ships, in... [Pg.169]

Polyamide-6 (Nylon-6, Perlon) and polyamide-6.6 (Nylon-6.6) are the most well known polyamides. Polyamide-based filaments find wide spread applications as yarns for textile or industrial and carpet materials [70], However, nylon-based textiles are uncomfortable to wear and difficult to finish due to their hydrophobic character. This characteristic also leads to fouling of PA-based ultrafiltration membranes by proteins and other biomolecules which increases the energy demand for filtration and requires cleaning with aggressive chemicals or replacement [71-73], Consequently the enhancement of the hydrophilicity of nylon is a key requirement for many applications and can be achieved by using plasma treatment [74-76], As a promising alternative, enzymatic hydrophilization of PA requires less energy and is not restricted to planar surfaces. [Pg.376]
