Complexity engineering

Geotextiles are a relatively new concept for solving problems in geotechnical engineering. They have gained wide use as not only an economical solution to these problems, but in many instances as the only viable solution to a complex engineering problem. This is evidenced by the fact that over a seven-year period from 1976 to 1983 sales of geotextiles in North America alone rose from 5 to 115 m (6 to 138 x 10 /yd ). [Pg.261]

A heat exchanger is a device that transfers heat from one medium to another the medium may be a solid, liquid, or gas. Some of the most complex engineering design problems relate to heat exchangers. [Pg.690]

Complexity Engineering Specific applications of CA to physical problems typically involve enormous efforts spent on obtaining just the right set of rules appropriate for a given problem. By succinctly suinniarizing the statistical behavior of a well-defined class of rules for a variety of lattice structures, the LST equations may be used to effectively guide searches for particular rules displaying the set of desired statistical behaviors. [Pg.248]

Utility power boilers Most modem plants usually operate at over 1,500 to 2,000 psig and feature some of the most complex engineering available in the world. Older plants may operate at only, say, 450 to 950 psig. [Pg.41]

To illustrate an application of nonlinear quantum dynamics, we now consider real-time control of quantum dynamical systems. Feedback control is essential for the operation of complex engineered systems, such as aircraft and industrial plants. As active manipulation and engineering of quantum systems becomes routine, quantum feedback control is expected to play a key role in applications such as precision measurement and quantum information processing. The primary difference between the quantum and classical situations, aside from dynamical differences, is the active nature of quantum measurements. As an example, in classical theory the more information one extracts from a system, the better one is potentially able to control it, but, due to backaction, this no longer holds true quantum mechanically. [Pg.63]

The inverse of a matrix is usually calculated numerically, particularly in realistically complex engineering applications. Standard computer library subroutines are readily available. We use the IMSL subroutine LEQ2C in this book to calculate the inverse of a complex matrix. [Pg.540]

It allows for the development of models of complex engineering systems and management structures. These models can be analyzed for inter-relationships between individual elements and the overall system function. Theoretically, there could be as many causes of an incident as there are system components. The term multiple-cause theory, coined by Peterson, is often used instead of system theory. [Pg.40]

Dimensional analysis is a useful tool for examining complex engineering problems by grouping process variables into sets that can be analyzed separately. If appropriate parameters are identified, the number of experiments needed for process design can be reduced and the results can be... [Pg.139]

ISO 37 refers to ISO 584373 for specification of the test machine. This standard was produced to avoid the need to attempt description of a complex engineering instrument in a testing standard. It is intended that all test methods using a tensile machine will refer to this document, which specifies requirements quite comprehensively, including tolerances on the measurement of force and extension. [Pg.139]

However, the military user is a relatively small fuel consumer when compared with the civilian market. This military user is also a relatively small player in the land vehicle market, and the propulsion and fuel technologies that are available to the military customer will be strongly influenced by the prevailing civilian markets. That is, the military customer will have to buy the propulsion technology produced by manufacturers for the dominant civilian market, particularly in the case of land vehicles where complex engine management systems mean that there is little scope for producing military specials at an economic cost. [Pg.104]

Sulfuric acid was also used in the manufacture of superphosphates, which were produced as fertilizers on a large scale by the mid-nineteenth century. By that time, a solution was found for the complex engineering problems that had hampered the use of the alternative process to produce soda... [Pg.218]

Polyamide-66 (PA66) is a semi-erystalline polymer (poly(hexamethylene adipamide)) synthesized by the polyeondensation of diamine and diaeid. The numbers 66 indicate how many (—CH2—) units occur in the diaeid and the diamine groups. Polyamide (PA) is a well-known material with different commereial names, e.g. Nylon by DuPont, Stanyl by DSM, etc. Polyamides are complex engineering polymers used for a wide range of industrial applications in bulk and fibrous forms. PA66 fibers are used in the moorings of ships, in... [Pg.169]

If the chocolate is raised to too high a temperature, and not cooled in the correct way, it will set in an unwanted form. To generate material in the right microstructure complex engineering procedures have been developed these operate in a fixed and sometimes empirical way. [Pg.530]
