Nylon 66 polyamidation

Nylon (Polyamide) PA is a crystalline plastic and the first and largest consumption of the engineering thermoplastic. This family of TPs are tough, slippery, with good electrical properties, but hygroscopic and with dimensional stability lower than most other engineering types. Also offered in reinforced and filled grades as a moderately priced metal replacement. [Pg.427]

Polymide polymers contain amide group NH CO in the main chain. The most important are linear aliphatic Polyamides. These are known as nylons. Polyamides are also used as adhesives, coatings and in engineering applications. [Pg.211]

Classify each polymer as an addition polymer (formed by addition polymerization) or a condensation polymer (formed by condensation polymerization). Then classify each condensation polymer as either a polyester or a nylon (polyamide). [Pg.85]

Nylon (polyamide fibers). The chemical structure of the nylon fiber looks just like the nylon resin. The polymerization processes are the same the numbering systems are the same and the two most important nylon fibers are the same nylon, 6 and 66. The difference is the length of the molecule in comparison to the cross-section. Thats regulated by the polymerization process conditions. [Pg.370]

Special terminology based on trade names has been employed for some polymers. Although trade names should be avoided, one must be familiar with those that are firmly established and commonly used. An example of trade-name nomenclature is the use of the name nylon for the polyamides from unsubstituted, nonbranched aliphatic monomers. Two numbers are added onto the word nylon with the first number indicating the number of methylene groups in the diamine portion of the polyamide and the second number the number of carbon atoms in the diacyl portion. Thus poly(hexamethylene adipamide) and polyfhexamethylene sebacamide) are nylon 6,6 and nylon 6,10, respectively. Variants of these names are frequently employed. The literature contains such variations of nylon 6,6 as nylon 66, 66 nylon, nylon 6/6, 6,6 nylon, and 6-6 nylon. Polyamides from single monomers are denoted by a single number to denote the number of carbon atoms in the repeating unit. Poly(e-caprolactam) or poly(6-aminocaproic acid) is nylon 6. [Pg.16]

When produced from reactants with an even number of carbon atoms, nylons (polyamides), PUs, and polyesters are more compact and have higher Tm values than those produced from reactants with an odd number of carbon atoms. [Pg.29]
