Polyacrylonitrile, packaging applications

Polyacrylonitrile, which is a semicrystalline polymer, can be used for many engineering applications, such as fiber spinning or for housing and package applications. A peculiarity of polyacrylonitrile is that it is insoluble in its monomer. This makes it very difficult to homopolymerize acrylonitrile in an emulsion polymerization process since nucleated polymer particles cannot grow by monomer swelling. [Pg.99]

Copolymers of acrylonitrile with other monomers are widely used. Copolymers of vi-nylidene chloride and acrylonitrile find application in low-gas-permeabUity films. St5rrene-acrylonitrile (SAN polymers) copolymers have also been used in packaging applications. Although the gas permeability of the copolymers is higher than for pure polyacrylonitrile, the acrylonitrile copolymers have lower gas permeability than many other packaging films. A number of acrylonitrile copolymers were developed for beverage containers, but the requirement for very low levels of residual acrylonitrile monomer in this application led to many products being removed from the market. One copolymer currently avail-... [Pg.68]

No amount of sterilization wiU prevent or even slow autooxidation, and there are only two defenses removal of O2 and addition of inhibitors. Oxygen barriers in food packaging are a major topic in the engineering of polymer films. The barrier properties of various polymers are very important in food applications, and many of these are multilayer polymers that have a thin layer of an impermeable polymer (such as polyacrylonitrile and ionic polymers) on a cheaper but O2-permeable polymer such as a polyolefin, which gives mechanical strength to the fikn. [Pg.410]

The major plastic resins used in packaging are high-density polyethylene, low-density and Unear low-density polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride. A variety of plastics are used in lesser quantities nylons or polyamides, polycarbonate, polyethylene naphthalate, polyvinyhdene chloride, ethylene vinyl alcohol, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylonitrile, and more. In many applications, copolymers... [Pg.148]
