Quaternary ammonium bromides and hydroxides (quats) are applied as templates in the synthesis of zeolites with relatively high Si/Al ratio. Examples will be given of the use of mon-, di-, poly- and associated quats as templates in zeolite growth. Templated zeolites of the MFI-type can be grown in a lateral or in an axial way onto metal supports, providing promising composite systems, for separation and catalysis, respectively. 

The effects of alkyl spacer length between both charged moieties with different substitution at, and with different hybridization of, the quat-ernized nitrogen were studied for a series of poly(carboxybetaines) derived from poly(4-vinylpyridine) and poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) by capillary electrophoresis, charge titration, and FTIR spectroscopy. The aforementioned poly(aminoamides) can be subjected to additional derivatization reactions. Some potential reactions include reaction with epichlorohydrin (to generate reactive functionalities), degradation of the polyamide chain (for repulping purposes), reaction with Quat 188 (to add pendant quatemaiy ammonium groups to the polymer chain), and reaction with 1,3-dichloropropane (to increase the molecular weight and to crosslink the polymer). 

Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), Xu et al. [85] showed that similar macromolecular co-assemblies derived from the cylindrical PE brush based on quat-ernized poly[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMAQ) complexed with short poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSSNa) have distinct longitudinal undulations (Fig. 8), thereby apparently providing experimental proof of a peculiar pearl-necklace structure of IPECs based on such branched PEs.

More recently, other surfactants such as poly(oxypropylene)glycols, alkylphenolpoly-glycol ethers, and certain quats have been used to make iodophors. The disinfection capability of such products is linked to the available iodine and not to the total iodine present in the complex. An excess of a surface-active wetting agent is needed if both cleaning and disinfection are required [11].

The impact on the PHRR when substituting a polymer oligomer as a surface treatment on montmorillonite for a quaternary ammonium ion is not a panacea [51,52]. The comparison of methylmethacrylate oligomer-treated montmorillonite with quat-treated montmorillonite in poly(methylmethacrylate), polystyrene, high-impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer, polypropylene, and polyethylene nanocomposites indicated sensitivity to polymer type and a poor correlation to the degree of exfoliation determined by X-ray analysis and TEM.
