FTIR-spectroscopy

FTIR spectroscopy can be used in diffuse reflectance, specular reflectance, and external reflectance in grazing angle reflectance mode [23]. It enables the analysis of functional group and specific bonds of surface species. Particles can be measured separately (diffuse reflectance mode) after being scraped from composite electrodes [24]. [Pg.289]

The principle of probe molecule use to investigate a solid surface is conceptually simple a molecule (whose vibrational modes are well known) in the gas or vapour phase is sent onto the surface to be analysed. The modification of the probe vibrations due to the interaction(s) will reflect the state of the surface itself, i.e. the physico-chemical properties of the sohd, the concentration of the adsorption sites, their strength, the mode of coordination, etc. The use and the choice of appropriate probe molecules have been detailed in numerous papers and in particular in reference 28, which should be consulted for further information. [Pg.111]

Besides the intrinsic usefulness of Fourier series and Fourier transforms for chemists (e.g., in FTIR spectroscopy), we have developed these ideas to illustrate a point that is important in quantum chemistry. Much of quantum chemistry is involved with basis sets and expansions. This has nothing in particular to do with quantum mechanics. Any time one is dealing with linear differential equations like those that govern light (e.g. spectroscopy) or matter (e.g. molecules), the solution can be written as linear combinations of complete sets of solutions. [Pg.555]

The most common and readily accessible methods are those based on ftir spectroscopy. Several of the more common of these are discussed here. [Pg.285]

Transmission Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The most straightforward method for the acquisition of in spectra of surface layers is standard transmission spectroscopy (35,36). This approach can only be used for samples which are partially in transparent or which can be diluted with an in transparent medium such as KBr and pressed into a transmissive pellet. The extent to which the in spectral region (typically ca 600 4000 cm ) is available for study depends on the in absorption characteristics of the soHd support material. Transmission ftir spectroscopy is most often used to study surface species on metal oxides. These soHds leave reasonably large spectral windows within which the spectral behavior of the surface species can be viewed. [Pg.285]

Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Attenuated total redectance (atr) ftir spectroscopy is based on the principle of total internal redection (40). Methods based on internal redection in the uv and visible regions of the spectmm are also common in addition to those in the ir region. The implementation of internal redection in the ir region of the spectmm provides a means of obtaining ir spectra of surfaces or interfaces, thus providing moleculady-specific vibrational information. [Pg.286]

Analytical investigations may be undertaken to identify the presence of an ABS polymer, characterize the polymer, or identify nonpolymeric ingredients. Fourier transform infrared (ftir) spectroscopy is the method of choice to identify the presence of an ABS polymer and determine the acrylonitrile—butadiene—styrene ratio of the composite polymer (89,90). Confirmation of the presence of mbber domains is achieved by electron microscopy. Comparison with available physical property data serves to increase confidence in the identification or indicate the presence of unexpected stmctural features. Identification of ABS via pyrolysis gas chromatography (91) and dsc ((92) has also been reported. [Pg.204]

In addition to modem spectroscopic methods ( H nmr spectroscopy, ftir spectroscopy) and chromatographic methods (gc, hplc), HBr titration (29) is suitable for the quantitative analysis of ethyleneimine samples which contain relatively large amounts of ethyleneimine. In this titration, the ethyleneimine ring is opened with excess HBr in glacial acetic acid, and unconsumed HBr is back-titrated against silver nitrate. [Pg.12]

Infrared spectroscopy, including Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, is one of the oldest techniques used for surface analysis. ATR has been used for many years to probe the surface composition of polymers that have been surface-modified by an etching process or by deposition of a film. RAIR has been widely used to characterize thin films on the surfaces of specular reflecting substrates. FTIR has numerous characteristics that make it an appropriate technique for... [Pg.243]

Another illustrative example of the application of FTIR spectroscopy to problems of interest in adhesion science is provided by the work of Taylor and Boerio on plasma polymerized silica-like films as primers for structural adhesive bonding [15]. Mostly these films have been deposited in a microwave reactor using hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as monomer and oxygen as the carrier gas. Transmission FTIR spectra of HMDSO monomer were characterized by strong... [Pg.258]

Most rubbers used in adhesives are not resistant to oxidation. Because the degree of unsaturation present in the polymer backbone of natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, nitrile rubber and polychloroprene rubber, they can easily react with oxygen. Butyl rubber, however, possesses small degree of unsaturation and is quite resistant to oxidation. The effects of oxidation in rubber base adhesives after some years of service life can be assessed using FTIR spectroscopy. The ratio of the intensities of the absorption bands at 1740 cm" (carbonyl group) and at 2900 cm" (carbon-hydrogen bonds) significantly increases when the elastomer has been oxidized [50]. [Pg.640]

Infrared spectroelectrochemical methods, particularly those based on Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy can provide structural information that UV-visible absorbance techniques do not. FTIR spectroelectrochemistry has thus been fruitful in the characterization of reactions occurring on electrode surfaces. The technique requires very thin cells to overcome solvent absorption problems. [Pg.44]

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is the most popular method for determining the imidization process in the solid state and identifying specific substituents on the macromolecular backbone (e.g., CN, SO3H, CO, SO2).131 A method for calculating the diermal imidization extent based on FTIR data has been reported by Pride.132 Raman spectroscopy was used on the model study of PMDA-ODA condensation, and the possible formation of an inline bond by reaction of an amino group with an imide carboxyle was evidenced.133... [Pg.300]

A number of analytical techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy,65-66 13C NMR,67,68 solid-state 13 C NMR,69 GPC or size exclusion chromatography (SEC),67-72 HPLC,73 mass spectrometric analysis,74 differential scanning calorimetry (DSC),67 75 76 and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA)77 78 have been utilized to characterize resole syntheses and crosslinking reactions. Packed-column supercritical fluid chromatography with a negative-ion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometric detector has also been used to separate and characterize resoles resins.79 This section provides some examples of how these techniques are used in practical applications. [Pg.407]

Surface forces measurement is a unique tool for surface characterization. It can directly monitor the distance (D) dependence of surface properties, which is difficult to obtain by other techniques. One of the simplest examples is the case of the electric double-layer force. The repulsion observed between charged surfaces describes the counterion distribution in the vicinity of surfaces and is known as the electric double-layer force (repulsion). In a similar manner, we should be able to study various, more complex surface phenomena and obtain new insight into them. Indeed, based on observation by surface forces measurement and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, we have found the formation of a novel molecular architecture, an alcohol macrocluster, at the solid-liquid interface. [Pg.3]

To examine this peculiar behavior, we have converted the elastic compressibility modulus, per unit area, Y (Fig. 12a), to the modulus per chain, Y = F/10 F (Fig. 12b). The elastic compressibility modulus per chain is practically constant, 0.6 0.1 pN/chain, at high densities and jumps to another constant value, 4.4 0.7 pN/chain, when the density decreases below the critical value. The ionization degree, a, of the carboxylic acid determined by FTIR spectroscopy gradually decreases with increasing chain density due to the charge regulation mechanism (also plotted in Fig. 12b). This shows that a does not account for the abrupt change in the elastic compressibihty modulus. [Pg.13]
