The equimolar copolymer of ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene is isomeric with poly(vinyhdene fluoride) but has a higher melting point (16,17) and a lower dielectric loss (18,19) (see Fluorine compounds, organic-poly(VINYLIDENE fluoride)). A copolymer with the degree of alternation of about 0.88 was used to study the stmcture (20). Its unit cell was determined by x-ray diffraction. Despite irregularities in the chain stmcture and low crystallinity, a unit cell and stmcture was derived that gave a calculated crystalline density of 1.9 g/cm. The unit cell is befleved to be orthorhombic or monoclinic (a = 0.96 nm, b = 0.925 nm, c = 0.50 nm 7 = 96%. [Pg.365]

Polymers such as polystyrene, poly(vinyl chloride), and poly(methyl methacrylate) show very poor crystallization tendencies. Loss of structural simplicity (compared to polyethylene) results in a marked decrease in the tendency toward crystallization. Fluorocarbon polymers such as poly(vinyl fluoride), poly(vinylidene fluoride), and polytetrafluoroethylene are exceptions. These polymers show considerable crystallinity since the small size of fluorine does not preclude packing into a crystal lattice. Crystallization is also aided by the high secondary attractive forces. High secondary attractive forces coupled with symmetry account for the presence of significant crystallinity in poly(vinylidene chloride). Symmetry alone without significant polarity, as in polyisobutylene, is insufficient for the development of crystallinity. Copolymerization. Vinyl chloride can be copolymerized with a variety of monomers. Vinyl acetate, the most important commercial comonomer, is used to reduce crystallinity, winch aids fusion and allows lower processing temperatures. Copolymers are used in flooring and coatings. This copolymer sometimes contains maleic add or vinyl alcohol (hydrolyzed from the poly(vinyl acetate ) to improve the coating s adhesion to other materials, including metals, Copolymers with vinylidene chloride are used as barrier films and coatings. Copolymers of vinyl chlonde with acrylic esters in latex from are used as film formers in paint, nonwoven fabric binders, adhesives, and coatings. A final example of a stereoselective heterogeneous catalytic system is the work of Laycock, Collacott, Skelton and Tchir.17 Layered double hydroxide (LDH) synthetic hydrotalcite materials were used to stereospecifically polymerize propylene oxide [PO] to crystalline isotactic and liquid atactic poly(propyleneoxide) [PPO]. These authors suggest that the LDH surface acts as other inorganic or organometallic coordination initiators or catalysts by providing specific surface orientations for propylene oxide monomer. X-ray powder diffraction showed some loss of crystallinity after calcination and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed an enhancement of Mg/Al content due to restructuring of the Mg and A1 surface atoms. Since the thermal degradation in phenylated polyphenyls of the type XXa is caused by the loss of pendant phenyl groups, and since the reported (4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15) properties of p-polyphenylenes are quite different from those of XXa, the synthesis of an unphenylated polyphenylene by this pathway was of considerable significance. Only a few results employing this reaction have thus far been obtained.
