Pollution prevention goal

The data collected is then used to prioritize waste streams and operations for assessment. Each waste stream is assigned a priority based on corporate pollution-prevention goals and objectives. Once waste origins are identified and ranked, potential methods to reduce the waste stream are evaluated. The identification of alternatives is generally based on discussions with the facility staff review of technical literature and contacts with suppliers, trade organizations, and regulatory agencies. [Pg.22]

This brings us to what the real objectives behind P2 are about. Pollution prevention is a carefully plarmed investment aimed at reducing an enterprise s operating costs through the elimination of harmful pollution. A successful P2 activity is a win-win type of investment — that is, the company not only eliminates pollution at the source, but does so on the condition that, at the very least, the activity pays for itself and, more favorably, provides attractive financial returns. The re-engineering considered for the pollution reduction and/or elimination must meet a set of well-defined financial goals within the enterprise otherwise it is not a worthwhile P2 practice. [Pg.356]

The turn-of-the-century architect and planner Daniel Burnham is remembered for his famous quotation, Make no little plans they lack the fire to excite men s minds. Gender aside, Burnham was speaking for a revolutionary vision. The pollution prevention movement should more boldly state a vision and goals for the next century. The plans for green chemistry and green solvents are not little, and in the pages that follow we can readily see that the response of scientists has been great. [Pg.17]

The DfE Program aims to turn pollution prevention into both a corporate and an environmental asset, by helping businesses incorporate environmental considerations into the product or process design and decision-making process. The program has three goals ... [Pg.264]

ORD has defined six fundamental goals for the its pollution prevention research program. These goals build upon existing ORD pollution prevention efforts, and broaden the research scope to enable the Agency to identify, develop, demonstrate, and transfer effective pollution prevention technologies and techniques. These goals are to ... [Pg.168]

Stimulate the development and implementation of technologies and processes that result in reduced pollution. Numerous pollution prevention opportunities exist in manufacturing, mining, agricultural, and service processes. This goal addresses the need to focus research activities on these processes to enable broad-scale reduction in pollution generation. [Pg.169]

Recognizing the value of pollution prevention to the business and the customer, progressive companies are developing corporate goals to motivate their employees to reduce the amount of waste being produced. Examples include the 3M Corporate Environmental Conservation Policy and the DuPont Company s Safety, Health and the Environment Commitment of zero waste generation and emissions, which is shown in Fig. 9. [Pg.432]
