Research scope

This Chapter starts with an example of an actual accident, that occurred in spite of all the measures and indicators implemented to prevent it from happening. Subsequently, some important safety concepts are defined to prevent confusion and misinterpretations. Then it is discussed why in spite of the developments in safety scope and environment since the industrial revolution measuring safety is still a problem. The Chapter ends by presenting the research scope and the derived research questions.

After World War II (WWII), the National Institute of Health broadened its research scope to include chronic diseases such as cancer and mental illness. In 1948, the institute was expanded and the name was changed to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). At present, the NIH consists of 17 institutes and is an agency within the U.S. Public Health Service, Department of Health and Human Services. Its budget in 1999 was U.S. 15.6 billion. The establishment and subsequent growth of the NIH reflects the emerging priority placed on scientific inquiry and treatments based on xmderstanding pathologic processes at a fundamental level. This trend continues currently as evidence-based medical practice.

Mikihito Takertaka received both the master s degree in engineering in 1988 and the doctor s degree in engineering in 1993 with Prof Takeji Hashimoto from Kyoto Urriversity. In 1997, he was appointed as an assistant professor of the Department of Polymer Chemistry in Kyoto University. He was promoted to associate professor in 2011. His research scope includes the dynamics of phase transitions of polymer alloys and the directed self-assembling of block copolymer thin films. 

The aim of this work is to develop and validate an expert system, by means of Bayesian networks, able to support the health monitoring process of a chiller unit, suitably manufactured for this research scope. 

In the research scope of supply chain planning, researchers seem to pay too much attention to supply chain production planning while few scholars are involved in integrated logistics planning of procurement-production-inventory-transportation of node enterprises in a multi-level multi-node supply chain.
