Building goals

The goal of all economic evaluations should be to eliminate all unprofitable projects. Some borderline, and perhaps a few good projects, will be killed along with the bad ones. However, it is much better to pass up several good projects than to build one loser. [Pg.240]

There is basically one goal for the partnership, with possible side benefits. The goal is to save money. When all the dust settles, that is it. However, there are associated benefits, the best of which is to minimize or even do away with adversarial relationships. It may be wishful thinking to believe that these will be completely eliminated. A related, but very important, benefit is to build trust between the parties. This is necessary to achieve the goal. [Pg.440]

The goal of this text is to build on the foundation of introductory organic chemistry to provide students and other readers a deeper understanding of structure and mechanism and the relationships between them. We have provided specific data and examples with which to illustrate the general principles that are discussed. Our purpose is to solidify the student s understanding of the basic concepts, but also to illustrate the way specific structural changes influence mechanism and reactivity. [Pg.830]

Ventilation quantities Compare outdoor air quantities to the building design goal and local and State building codes and make adjustments as necessary. It is also informative to see how your ventilation rate compares to ASHRAE 62-1989, because that guideline was developed with the goal of preventing lAQ problems. [Pg.210]

To meet this challenge, we have adopted a comprehensive approach to the management of process safety throughout our operations, which builds on our existing strengths. The goal of this approach is to assure that, in all of our businesses, we maintain PSM standards and practices that ... [Pg.26]

Much of the study of kinetics constitutes a study of catalysis. The first goal is the determination of the rate equation, and examples have been given in Chapters 2 and 3, particularly Section 3.3, Model Building. The subsection following this one describes the dependence of rates on pH, and most of this dependence can be ascribed to acid—base catalysis. Here we treat a very simple but widely applicable method for the detection and measurement of general acid-base or nucleophilic catalysis. We consider aqueous solutions where the pH and p/f concepts are well understood, but similar methods can be applied in nonaqueous media. [Pg.268]

Energy efficiency had always been a goal of building owners simply because they were trying to reduce... [Pg.28]

By the beginning of the nineteenth centui"y, Fulton turned his attention to his obsession with submarines and steamships. He made uo secret of his goal for submarines—he intended to build them in order to destroy all ships of war so that appropriate attention could be devoted by society to the fields of education, industry and free speech. In 1801, he managed to stay under water for four hours and twenty minutes in one of his devices, and in 1805 he demonstrated the ability to utilize a torpedo to blow up a well built ship of two hundred tons. Unfortunately for Robert, neither the French nor British government was particularly impressed with the unpredictable success, nor the importance of his innovations so he packed his bags and returned to America in December of 1806. [Pg.538]

Scientists commonly interpret a theory in terms of a model, a simplified version of the object of study. Like hypotheses, theories and models must be subjected to experiment and revised if experimental results do not support them. For example, our current model of the atom has gone through many formulations and progressive revisions, starting from Dalton s vision of an atom as an uncut-table solid sphere to our current much more detailed model, which is described in Chapter 1. One of the main goals of this text is to show you how to build models, turn them into a testable form, and then refine them in the light of additional evidence. [Pg.28]

However, this view seems to let mentors off their responsibility for relationship building. If a mentor understands the art of establishing rapport (for example, if the mentor offers trust, empathy, and wants to empower the mentee), and if there is a clear goal to achieve, people will find their points of similarity. In fact, every pair has far more points of similarity than dissimilarity ... [Pg.142]
