Ideally the historical record of stream water quaUty would extend back to a time when human activities in the drainage basin had no significant effects. This "pristine" condition had probably already passed in most U.S. rivers before any organized water quaUty studies were made, as concern about apparent stream pollution was commonly a motivating factor in starting such studies (see Water, pollution). [Pg.198]

Considerable work has been done on the behavior of pollutant species at air-water and air-soil interfaces. For example, wet and diy deposition measurements of various gaseous and particulate species have been made over a wide range of atmospheric and land-cover conditions. Still, the problem is of such complexity that species-dependent and particle-size-dependent rates of transfer from the atmosphere to water and soil surfaces are not completely understood. Although the major concern about the fate of organic pollntants in soil has been about pesticides in agricultural soils, other scenarios are also important. The disposal of wastes on land (e.g., at landfill sites) has raised questions about movement of pollutants contained in them into the air or neighboring rivers or water conrses. The presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) or PAHs in snch wastes can be a significant source of pollution. Likewise, the disposal of some industrial wastes in landfill sites (e.g., by the chemical industry) raises questions about movement into air or water and needs to be carefully controlled and monitored. [Pg.83]

On January 1, 1977, the chemical industry truly became a regulated industry. The environmental laws up until that time had covered some chemicals, but had been media oriented. That is — they were concerned about certain chemicals that escaped as emissions or pollutants to various media - the air, our water, contaminated our food or entered the workplace. TSCA changed that direction. It was designed to regulate commerce on chemical substances. TSCA potentially applies to all chemicals manufactured, processed, distributed or used in the U.S. except those chemicals already regulated under certain other federal laws. TSCA affects not only the chemical industry itself, but the many other industries whose products are chemical in nature. This includes most all industrial products. [Pg.81]

There is much concern about the emissions which result when fuel sulfur combusts (i.e., sulfur oxides). These gaseous products further react to form environmental pollutants such as sulfuric acid and metal sulfates. Active sulfur and certain sulfur compounds can corrode injection systems and contribute to combustion chamber deposits. Under low-temperature operating conditions, moisture can condense within the engine. Sulfur compounds can then combine with water to form corrosive acidic compounds. [Pg.60]

Nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, referred to as nitro-aromatic compounds hereafter, constitute one of the most troubling classes of environmental pollutants. They are derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that contain two or more fused aromatic rings made of carbon and hydrogen atoms and at least one nitro group (Fig. 10.1). Concern about these compounds arises partly from their ubiquity nitro-aromatic compounds are released to the environment directly from a variety of incomplete combustion processes [1] and are also formed in situ by atmospheric reactions of PAHs [2]. Nitro-aromatic compounds have been found in grilled food in diesel, gasoline, and wood-smoke emissions and are commonly found in atmospheric particulate matter, natural waters, and sediment [3-8],... [Pg.218]

Probably the strongest conclusion produced by these information gathering activities was that people were generally ambivalent about the refinery, voicing neither major criticisms nor major support. In general, those contacted believed that the refinery complied with environmental laws and that this compliance probably protected the community. Most people felt that there were more pressing problems in the Yorktown area than the refinery. For example, land development, traffic, and sewer and water problems were cited as major quality-of-life concerns. When specifically asked about air pollution, water pollution, and disposal of solid waste, residents indicated that they did have a concern with respect to the oil refinery.
