Pollen allergy

A 22-year-old female college student with no remarkable medical history notes shortness of breath when she takes her daily 5-mile run, which has worsened progressively over the past 3 weeks. On review of systems, it is discovered that she has experienced intermittent sensations of chest tightness over the past 2 months that she ascribed to pollen allergies, and 3 days prior to presentation she experienced an episode of hemoptysis. Her only medication is oral contraceptives, and she reports no known drug allergies. A chest x-ray is remarkable for a 10 x 12 cm mediastinal mass.

To date, several plant food-derived profilins have been characterized, most of them being evidently involved in PFS. Hazelnut profilin Cor a 2 and the profilins from Rosaceae fruits strawberry Fra a 4, apple Mai d 4, cherry Pru av 4, almond Pru du 4, peach Pru p 4, and pear Pyr c 4, for example, are considered to cross-react with grass and/or birch pollen Bet v 2 profilin (van Ree et al. 1995). Medically this good may sometimes seem trivial, as in the avoidance of a sleepless night in a noisy hotel or of social embarrassment from a profusely running nose due to seasonal pollen allergy (hay-fever). Such benefits are not necessarily trivial to recipients, concerned to be at their best in important matters, whether of business, of pleasure or of passion, i.e. with quality of life.
