Stratifying water systems for selective extraction of thiocyanate complexes of platinum metals have been proposed. The extraction degree of mthenium(III) by ethyl and isopropyl alcohols, acetone, polyethylene glycol in optimum conditions amounts to 95-100%. To prevent carbonate formation by the carbon dioxide in the air or that produced by oxidation of carbonaceous fuels, an acid electrolyte is necessary hence it is important to find electrocatalysts for an acid medium. Independently of Jasinski, we were soon able to show 3>4> that under certain conditions the reduction of oxygen in dilute sulfuric acid proceeded better with phthalocyanines on suitable substrates than with platinum metal. The purified phthalocyanines were dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid and precipitated on to the carbon substrate by addition of water. This coated powder was made into porous electrodes bound with polyethylene and having a geometrical surface of 5 cm2 (cf. Section 2.2.2.1.). The results obtained with compact electrodes of this type are shown in Fig. 6. [Pg.147]

An important specialized type of voltammetric system is a self-contained cell for the determination of 02 in the gas or solution phases. This is the so-called Clark electrode,66,67 which consists of a platinum or gold electrode in the end of a support rod that is covered by an 02 permeable membrane (polyethylene or Teflon) such that a thin film of electrolyte is contained between the electrode surface and the membrane. A concentric tube provides the support for the membrane and the means to contain an electrolyte solution in contact with a silver-silver chloride reference electrode. The Clark device has found extensive application to monitor 02 partial pressure in blood, the atmosphere, and in sewage plants. By appropriate adjustment of the applied potential it gives a voltammetric current plateau that is directly proportional to the 02 partial pressure. The membrane material prevents interference from electroactive ions as well as from surface-contaminating biological materials. Five and twenty-three hundredths grams of germanium(IV) oxide (0.05 mol) is dissolved in 15 ml. of a concentrated aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid (47 %). A platinum evaporating dish or a polyethylene plastic beaker is used to keep silicon contamination to a minimum. A solution of 10.5 g. of barium chloride (0.05 mol) in 50 ml. of water is added. Barium hexafluorogermanate forms as a white, granular precipitate, which is filtered and washed free of chloride.
