Plastics additives polyolefins

Plastics Additives. Many claims have been made for the use of nickel chemicals as additives to various resin systems. By far the most important appHcation is as uv-quenchers in polyolefins (173,174). Among the useful nickel complexes in these systems are dibutyldithiocarbamate nickel [13927-77-0], nickel thiobisphenolates, and nickel amide complexes of bisphenol sulfides (175). The nickel complex of... [Pg.15]

Polyolefins. Interest has been shown in the plasticization of polyolefins (5) but plasticizer use generally results in a reduction of physical properties (12), and compatibiHty can be achieved only up to 2 wt %. Most polyolefins give adequate physical properties without plasticization. There has been use of plasticizers with polypropylene to improve its elongation at break (7) although the addition of plasticizer can lower T, room temperature strength, and flow temperature. This can be overcome by simultaneous plasticization (ca 15 wt % level) and cross-linking. Plasticizers used include DOA. [Pg.129]

Chlorinated polyether is formulated particularly for products requiring, good chemical resistance. Other materials exhibiting good chemical resistance include all of the fluorocarbon plastics, ethylpentenes, polyolefins, certain phenolics, and diallyl phtha-late compounds. Additives such as fillers, plasticizers, stabilizers, colorants, and type catalysts can decrease the chemical resistance of unfilled plastics. Certain chemicals in cosmetics will affect plastics, and tests are necessary in most cases with new formulations. Temperature condition is also very important to include in the evaluation. Careful tests must be made under actual use conditions in final selection studies. [Pg.433]

Considerable variation is, of course, possible among different grades of the same polyolefin, and useful modifications are obtained by copolymerization, blending with other polymers, and compounding with various additives. As with other crystalline plastics, the polyolefins are not benefited by addition of liquid plasticizers. Such "foreign" molecules are generally not accepted by the crystal lattice, or, if incorporated, cause excessive weakening. [Pg.351]

EPDM and EPR are used to modify polyolefins, primarily in the automotive industry. The largest volume is in automotive PP bumpers. This application is gradually being replaced by impact-resistant polymers produced by metallocene technology, providing better performance and economics. DuPont Dow and Exxon are leading producers in North America. When used with plastics such as nylon, PET, and PBT, the EPDM and EPR are often modified with a functionalized monomer to allow them to react with the plastic. Additionally, the shell of a core-shell modifier can also be modified to include a reactive group. Suppliers of fimctionalized modifiers include Rohm Haas, AtoFina, Shell, and Exxon. [Pg.300]
