Plasticizer sweating

Airborne dusts settle onto food, water, clothing, and other objects, and may subsequently be transferred to the mouth. A more recent study suggests that lead, applied to the skin as lead acetate or lead nitrate, was rapidly absorbed through the skin and was detected in sweat, blood, and urine within 6 hours of application (Stauber et al. 1994). In this study, 4.4. mg of lead was applied to the skin under a covered wax/plastic patch on the forearms of human subjects of the applied dose, 1.3 mg of lead was not recovered from skin washings. The amount that actually remained in (or on) the skin and the mass balance of the fate of this lead was not determined it may have been dermally absorbed or eliminated from the skin by exfoliation of epidermal cells. Thus, while this study provides evidence for dermal absorption of lead, it did not quantify the fraction of applied dose that was absorbed. The quantitative significance of the dermal absorption pathway as a contributor to lead body burden remains uncertain. [Pg.425]

Rubbers are plasticized with petroleum oils, before vulcanization, to improve processability and adhesion of rubber layers to each other and to reduce the cost and increase the softness of the final product. Large quantities of these oil-extended rubbers are used in tire compounds and related products. The oil content is frequently about 50 wt% of the styrene-butadiene rubber. The chemical composition of the extender oil is important. Saturated hydrocarbons have limited compatibility with most rubbers and may sweat-out. Aromatic oils are more compatible and unsaturated straight chain and cyclic compounds are intermediate in solvent power. [Pg.462]

The anterior hairline is a special area. A first strip of Leukoflex is placed directly on the patient s skin, at the edge of the hairline. Any hair sticking out over this edge should be cut off so that it does not get pulled out when the mask is removed 24 hours later. A hairnet is placed on the patient s hair. Compared to other drugs of abuse, analysis of cannabinoids presents some difficult challenges. THC and 11-OH-THC are highly lipophilic and present in low concentrations in body fluids. Complex specimen matrices, i.e., blood, sweat, and hair, may require multi-step extractions to separate cannabinoids from endogenous lipids and proteins.
