Plasticizer fugitive

Migration of ions through the plasticizer is frequently considered to be a function of the mobility of the plasticizer itself (2,5). In many electrical applications, where fugitive monomeric plasticizers like DOP can cause damage, they can be replaced by non-fugitive polymeric plasticizers such as viscous liquid polyesters. Comparison of DOP vs. a typical polymeric plasticizer, Rohm Haas Paraplex 0-25 poly (propylene sebacate), showed no significant improvement in volume resistivity (Table VI), particularly when its lower plasticizing efficiency was considered. Thus plasticizer mobilitv alone does not help us explain volume resistivity (5). 

If markets for char cannot be developed, the char becomes a major solid waste problem. Analysis of char from the pyrolysis of scrap tires does not indicate a problem with hazardous materials.4 However if it must be disposed of in a landfill, the char should be collected in plastic bags and shipped and disposed of in steel drums to prevent additional fugitive emissions during transportation and disposal.

Plasticizer failure can shorten the useful life of the plastic product. Failure can be either loss of plasticizer (it is fugitive ) or degradation of the plasticizer ( aging ). 

Ethylene glycol diacetate n. A very slowly evaporating solvent for cellulosic and acrylic resins, sometimes used as a fugitive plasticizer for vinyls and acrylics. 

Dyes should be avoided in plasticized PVC and olefins because they tend to migrate. Plasticizers solubilize the dyes making them fugitive. In olefins, the dyes lack an affinity for aliphatic hydrocarbons and consequently migrate to the surface. Migration testing is a standard procedure unless the dye is proven in the polymer system. 

Over long periods of time or at higher temperatures the plasticizer can volatilize from the plastic. Upon aging, PVC can lose its flexibility and embrittle because of the fugitive nature of plasticizers. Compared with phthalates, plasticizers based upon trimellitic anhydride offer greater... 

Solvents. Solvents are added for much the same reasons as oils and plasticizers. Additionally they may interact with the substrate, e.g., by partially dissolving it. Because they can be volatile they may also be used as fugitive plasticizers to modify the drying and coalescence behavior of the adhesive. 

Additives used as compatibilizers in liquid stabilizers are also used as viscosity depressants, for example, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (Butyl Cellosolve ) or diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (Butyl Carbitol , both Dow Chemical). At a 1-3 phr level, they are more effective in reducing viscosity and viscosity build than aliphatic alcohols. (It must be kept in mind that such generalizations may be influenced by choice of plasticizer and resin, and, therefore, have exceptions.) Glycol ether surfactants may or may not be completely fugitive on fusion. If present after processing, there will be discernible odor.
