Plasminogen is inherited as two codominant autosomal alleles. Fetal synthesis and the absence of transplacental passage have been demonstrated. In newborns there is a decrease in both plasma plasminogen concentration, and functional plasminogen activity, suggestive of a fetal dysfunctional plasminogen molecule. Several hereditary dysfunctional molecules have been described in adults with recurrent thromboembolic disease. The defects in these molecules include abnormal active sites, impaired activator binding, and defective activation. [Pg.178]

The ionophores and several other specialty products are included in Table 13.8 for comparison purposes. Products of mammalian cell culture such as plasminogen activator and erythropoietin are included as fermentation products in this listing because they are normally manufactured by cellular processes in bioreactors. Aside from the five commodity chemicals in this table, the most dramatic change in the commercial chemicals produced by fermentation results from the impact of genetic engineering and recombinant DNA methods on the specialty products. Antibiotics and biopolymers (hormones, enzymes, etc.) with molecular structures too complex for conventional chemical synthesis will continue to be manufactured by microbial processes (Hinman, 1993). [Pg.542]

Plasminogen Activator and the Transformed Phenotype In Vitro Studies -One protease which Increases in many cell types after neoplastic transformation is plasminogen activator (PA). The synthesis of PA may be elevated 50-300 fold after transformation. PA is an active serine protease which cleaves at arginine bonds. The enzyme can be inhibited by 1-32 isopropylfluorophosphate, nitrophenyl-guanldobenzoate, and benzamidine. [Pg.230]
