Plant succession

Principle of Operation Spiral concentration of ores and industrial materials is based primarily on the specific-gravity differentials of the materials to be separated. The shape facdor of the feed material is also important, and utilization of reagentized feed can change the apparent specific gravity of component minerals by forced attachment of air bubbles to mineral floes. The best known spiral-type concentrator is the Humphreys spiral concentrator, which first proved its commercial feasibihty in 1943. In that year an Oregon plant successfully... [Pg.1786]

Biomass Redistribution Associated with Deforestation and Fire. The influence of deforestation on biogeochemical cycles is dependent upon a number of factors associated with the unique characteristics of the ecosystem (climate, soils, topography, etc), the quantity of the total nutrient pool stored in aboveground biomass (Table II), and the level of disturbance (i.e. the degree of canopy removal, soil disturbance, and the quantity of wood or other forest products exported from the site). The quantity of biomass consumed by one or more slash fires following deforestation can also dramatically increase nutrient losses, influence post fire plant succession, and hence, postfire biogeochemical cycles. [Pg.430]

More needs to be learned about plant succession and why it proceeds as it does in a number of different environments. Considerable evidence exists that allelochemicals may have impact in this area. [Pg.618]

Operators of the Tokyo demonstration plant have concluded that phosphoric acid fuel cell technology is ready for commercialization. The project demonstrated that (I) fuel cells can be sited in urban areas which are regulated by strict environmental constraints (2) performance and operational characteristics were very close to design goals and (3) utility personnel can efficiently operate and maintain fuel cell plant equipment with minimal additional training. As a consequence of the demonstration plant success, a new 11 -MW power plant will be developed and marketed. A comparison of the new 1 C 23 Unit with the 4,5 MW demonstration plant is given in Table 4. [Pg.690]

In computerese, operating discipline is the software—standards, written procedures, operating instructions, guidelines, training, supervision, and conduct—needed to operate a plant successfully. [Pg.298]

The progression of plant succession through the formation of "vegetation islands" and later secondary forest greatly changes the hydrological cycle at a local scale. This can be demonstrated by the similarity between the water depletion profiles obtained in secondary and primary forests Qipp et al. 1998). [Pg.99]

At the same time, scientists had been experimenting with metal containers to store food. The first metal canning of food took place in New York in 1812, when a small plant successfully canned oysters, meats, fruits and vegetables in hermetically sealed containers. [Pg.8]

Many economists in this field predict a rise of 75% in the output of industrial chemicals during the next decade. Thus, while we will enter the sixties with overcapacity in many chemicals, the expected rise in consumption during the period will require further expansions. Because those in the business will seek to maintain or improve their position, and undoubtedly there will be some newcomers in many fields, the new expansions will probably precede actual demand and again give overcapacity. Because of the time required for construction of facilities, usually 12 to 24 months, and the necessity for building large economic-sized plants, successful companies must commit themselves to expansion before the actual new demand is realized. Many factors in our economy point to continued inflation. Cost of raw materials, labor, and services will rise. Most of the chemicals in this field are now produced on such a tonnage scale and have had so many years of intensive technical work on the processes that further cost reductions will be hard to realize. If inflation does then continue, the cost-price squeeze will continue to exert extreme pressure. [Pg.57]
