Plant auxiliary systems

This section should provide relevant information on plant specific auxiliary systems. 

This subsection should provide relevant information on the water systems associated with the plant as described in paras 3.65-3.70. It should include, for example, the station service water system, the cooling system for reactor auxiliaries, the makeup system for demineralized water, the ultimate heat sink and the condensate storage facilities. 

This subsection should provide relevant information on any other plant auxiliary system whose operation may influence plant safety and that has not been covered in any other part of the SAR for example, the communication systems, the lighting systems, the cooling water system, the starting system, the lubrication system and the combustion air intake and exhaust system for the diesel generator.

The plant auxiliary systems consist of the water, process and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems that support the APIOOO. They generally provide component cooling, chemistry monitoring and control, waste storage and disposal, and habitability functions.

Perhaps the most important role of the plant engineer is process optimization. This function has the sole responsibility for improving the reliability and performance of production and auxiliary systems. 

The supply system for the power plant auxiliaries, including the provision of supplies to any important drives and the provision of standby supply systems. The protection and synchronizing schemes applicable to the generator circuit. 

Capital cost This cost must cover the supply and erection of all the new plant, including auxiliary systems or modifications to existing as necessary.

Distillation columns are expensive items in any plant, and are tricky to control. They should initially be built large enough to accommodate a proposed expansion. The reboilers, condensers, and pumps, however, do not need to be designed to handle any more than the initial throughput. Figure 5-1 shows how the auxiliary system may be expanded by placing similar equipment in parallel when the plant capacity is increased. 

Electric Power System Design For specific applications, fuel cells can be used to supply DC power distribution systems designed to feed DC drives such as motors or solenoids, controls, and other auxiliary system equipment. The goal of the commercial fuel cell power plant is to deliver usable AC power to an electrical distribution system. This goal is accomplished through a subsystem that has the capability to deliver the real power (watts) and reactive power (VARS) to a facility s internal power distribution system or to a utility s grid. Water Systems These systems usually form the third highest cost item in chemical-plant auxiliaries, with cooling towers representing the largest part of the investment. Although the installed cost increases with the terminal temperature range, an approximate cost correlation is given by... 

Depending on the complexity of the installation, scheduling logistic software can be used to analyze the capacity of the plant and de-bottleneck while it is stiH in the design phase. In addition to the process side, requirements on auxiliary systems like utilities, drains, and waste water treatment systems have to be reliably estimated. 

The plant design would be based on production of many himdreds of essentially identical modules. Ideally, three or four major assemblies would be fabricated, quality inspected, and tested prior to shipment. With exception of the nuclear assembly and its auxiliary systems and components, these types of major production assemblies have been demonstrated in the large diesel and combined cycle plants operating under much the same technological complexity as the proposed nuclear plant. 

Under the 10 and last Decommissioning Permit, the remaining auxiliary systems (sodium washing plant, ventilation plant, liquid effluent system, gaseous effluent system, etc.) are to be dismantled and any buildings remaining are to be decontaminated, measured for clearance, and then demolished, if necessary. Then the site is to be recultivated. 

The nuclear part of the plant (i.e. the reactor and its auxiliary systems - the nuclear island ) had been supplied by the Babcock Wilcox company. The architect engineer, Bums Roe, had built the remainder of plant.

To reduce the amount of field welding during plant fabrication, the 42-in. and 30-in. pipes are supplied in major pieces, complete with shop-installed instrumentation nozzles and connecting nozzles to the auxiliary systems. Where required, the nozzles are supplied with safe ends to facilitate field welding of the connecting piping.

To ensure that the chemistry specifications of the primary coolant are maintained the addition of chemicals is necessary. This is usually performed via the chemical control system. This system is part of the nuclear auxiliary systems just as are the primary coolant purification systems described in Section 1.1.3. In order to maintain the specified H2 concentration in the primary coolant, either an adequate H2 partial pressure is established in the volume control system or H2 is directly injected into the high-pressure system (newer Siemens/KWU plants).
