A company s PSM initiative deserves some special treatment to attract the initial attention that will help give it momentum. Depending on what is already in place, a special edition of the company newsletter could be produced, including a letter from the CEO and a copy of the PSM vision statement. Other information might include identification of the proposed PSM champion and a summary of the company s preliminary plans. (Two examples of such summaries appear as Figures 2-6 and 2-7.)... 

Before any plan can be developed you must first have a vision of what the fully integrated system might look like. It may also be helpful to contrast the existing arrangements for PSM and ESH with this vision of the future. In this way, the advantages of integration can be more completely understood. 

The planning processes described herein were traditional in nature, with little variation from year to year. Growth was steady, equipment technology advancements were available for the conditions expected, and while utility facilities were capital-intensive, a regulated guaranteed return on investment resulted in adequate financing capital. The utility planner had a vision of the future with acceptable accuracy.

Any work planned for the future should also be discussed, since the added cost of accommodating for it in the beginning may be just a fraction of what would have to be paid for later modifications. All pertinent facts must be revealed a minor omission could make a big difference in laboratory safety. A laboratory operator who has studied the various rules and regulations with care will have no problem handling such discussions.

FCE plans to demonstrate a molten carbonate fuel cell/turbine hybrid system in late 2000. A panel of 17 environmental experts convened by the National Academy of Sciences adopted an unfavorable report on the president s plan, however. They said that the plan lacked "most of the basic elements of a strategic plan a guiding vision, executable goals, clear timetables and criteria for measuring progress." They were also concerned that the plan missed the opportunity to cooperate with other countries on research on climate change issues. 

The turn-of-the-century architect and planner Daniel Burnham is remembered for his famous quotation, Make no little plans they lack the fire to excite men s minds. Gender aside, Burnham was speaking for a revolutionary vision. The pollution prevention movement should more boldly state a vision and goals for the next century. The plans for green chemistry and green solvents are not little, and in the pages that follow we can readily see that the response of scientists has been great. 

Corporate agendas may be written down in the form of mission statements, corporate plans, action points, and similar documents. But ultimately agendas are a psychological phenomenon. They are the ideas and visions that managers carry around in their heads that provide the reference points against which decisions to do or support something are made. 

As project leaders. Determiners will bulldoze their way through all difficulties and opposition. Wariness about being used or controlled by others may result In a reluctance to listen or give way, even when plans now appear inappropriate. While their style can be effective for achieving goals, their goals may be confined within a limited vision.
