Precipitators are currently used for high collection efficiency on fine particles. The use of electric discharge to suppress smoke was suggested in 1828. The principle was rediscovered in 1850, and independently in 1886 and attempts were made to apply it commercially at the Dee Bank Lead Works in Great Britain. The installation was not considered a success, probably because of the cmde electrostatic generators of the day. No further developments occurred until 1906 when Frederick Gardiner Cottrell at the University of California revived interest (U.S. Pat. 895,729) in 1908. The first practical demonstration of a Cottrell precipitator occurred in a contact sulfuric acid plant at the Du Pont Hercules Works, Pinole, California, about 1907. A second installation was made at Vallejo Junction, California, for the Selby Smelting and Lead Company. 

Pinoglycyl Acetate.—This ester can be prepared by the direct acetylation of pinoglycol, C,gH,.0(0H)g, an alcohol resulting from the oxida-.tion of pinol with permanganate of potassium. It can also be prepared from pinol dibromide and acetate of silver. It is an ester with an excellent fruity odour, of the formula C,gH, 0(CgHg0.2).2, melting at 97° to 98°, and boiling at 155° at 20 mm. pressure, or at 127° at 13 mm.

Immobilization of A and B blood group oligosaccharide haptens and preparation of immunoadsorbents with specificity to anti-A and anti-B antibodies has been carried out with the use of poly acrylate-coated PG (WPG-PA) [124]. Prespacered A and B-trisaccharide-fl-aminopropylglycosides were used for the synthesis. WPG-PA (1 g) quantitatively binds both haptens (2 pinole) whereas some other activated affinity supports (for example, CNBr-Sepharose 4B) do not. On the other hand, glycidoxypropyl-silica binds prespacered haptens completely but these materials reveal no specific adsorptivity.

A subsequent more detailed study of data requirements for the 1,1-ADEQUATE spectrum when HSQC-1,1-ADEQUATE spectra were to be calculated50 showed that it was possible to reduce the sample size still further to below 0.5 mg ( 1.4 pinole). 

Quantities such as milligrams (mg), micromoles (pinol), and units refer to amounts. Concentration is the amount per volume, so that molar (M), micromolar ( xM), milligrams per milliliter (mg/ml), and units per milliliter (units/ml) are concentrations. A unit is the amount of enzyme that will catalyze the conversion of 1 punol of substrate to product in 1 min under a given set of conditions. 

In the determination of silicate, a detection limit of 0.5 pmol/l was achieved with a relative precision of better than 1% at concentrations above 10 pinoles silicon/1.

Other authors (e.g., G10, W18) define the unit as micromoles X 10-3 NADPH2 (or NADH2) formed per 1.00ml enzyme solution diluted by the indicated test volume per hour, or as the quantity of enzyme in the test system reducing 0.01 pinole NADP (or NAD) per minute at a given temperature. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the unit be defined as the number of micromoles of substrate converted per milliliter of serum per one hour at room temperature.
