A totally different method is being used if the aluminum pigments are coated with colored metal oxides. By this method very heat resistant, colored metallic pigments can be produced of various shades depending on the applied metal oxide. These shades are less intense and less brilliant [8] if compared to aluminum pigments colored with organic colorants [9]. [Pg.212]

The TPO part is power washed and the olefinic color coat is applied on the untreated, non-polar TPO surface. The ability of the Kraton Liquid Polymer to be formulated into a production color coat is a recent development and the adhesion mechanism is believed to be based on diffusion of very similar materials into each other with the aid of heat and solvents during the paint bake cycle. There may be other adhesion mechanisms occurring simultaneously. QC method TPO surface 1/visual, on-line identifies the color of the pigmented color coat ranging in thickness between 0.9-1.2 mils Painted part 1/ cross-hatch adhesion, 2/ other tests. [Pg.274]

Whereas the eadiest fluorescent-dye pigments would last only 20 days outdoors in a screen-ink film, fade resistance has been improved to such an extent that some modem daylight-fluorescent coated panels stiU have useful color after nine months or mote in Florida sunlight in a 45° exposure tack facing south. The fluorescent layer is usually coated with an acrylic film containing a uv absorber. Indoor-accelerated exposure equipment is, of course, invaluable in the development of such systems. Better dyes and resins very likely will make possible fat mote stable coatings in the future. [Pg.300]

Opacifiers are fine inorganic powders, usually white, that are used to reduce the transparency of ceramic gla2es and porcelain enamels. The coating becomes opaque because the particles of the opacifter scatter and reflect the incident light. When inorganic pigments are combined with white opacifiers, pastel colors are obtained. [Pg.16]

Titanium dioxide (E171, Cl white 6) is a white, opaque mineral occurring naturally in three main forms rutile, anatase, and brookite. More than 4 million tons of titanium dioxide are produced per year and it is widely used for industrial applications (paints, inks, plastics, textiles) and in small amounts as a food colorant. ° "° Production and properties — Titanium oxide is mainly produced from ilmenite, a titaniferous ore (FeTiOj). Rutile and anatase are relatively pure titanium dioxide (Ti02) forms. Titanium oxide pigment is produced via chloride or sulfate processes via the treatment of the titanium oxide ore with chlorine gas or sulfuric acid, followed by a series of purification steps. High-purity anatase is preferred for utilization in the food industry. It may be coated with small amounts of alumina or silica to improve technological properties. [Pg.118]

Colorants have been developed for special effects. Pearlescent or iridescent give an attractive appearance. They are often used for coating paper (e.g., cosmetic packaging). The pigment consists of thin platelets, less than 1 pm thickness, which have a high refractive index, e.g., mica coated with Ti02. [Pg.116]

Pearlescent pigments contain small flakes or platelets of the mineral mica that are additionally coated with a very thin layer of titanium dioxide. The simultaneous reflection of light from many layers of small platelets creates an impression of luster and sheen. By varying the thickness of the coating on the surface of the mica particles, pigment manufacturers can achieve a range of colors for the pearlescent effect. [Pg.147]

A pigment is said to bleed if some portion of it migrates from the application medium in which it is partly dissolved to a similar colorless or differently colored medium with which it is in contact. This phenomenon is of particular concern to the plastics and coatings industry. [Pg.66]

Paint A coating with a colored pigment included. It is always opaque. [Pg.347]
