Piercing power

The shaped-charge effect was first described in 1883. Shortly before the Second World War, Thomanekfound that the piercing power of the shaped charge could be significantly increased by lining the hollow space. 

The piercing power is also rated at 10% of the extrusion power this calculation is based upon a pressure of 30 to 40 kg/mm on the face of the piercing mandrel. It is in special cases only that a higher piercing power is chosen when, for instance, piercing is carried out with a thick mandrel and the end of the container bore is closed by a blank die. In any case, pullback power and piercing j)ower should be carefully verified when the maximum mandrel diameter is known ). 

The highest pressure capacities of press installations built are about 12,000 tons with piercing powers up to about 3,000 tons (see Fig. 118).

The Hanford N Reactor. The Hanford N reactor was built in 1964 for purposes of plutonium production during the Cold War. It used graphite as moderator, pierced by over 1000 Zircaloy 2 tubes. These pressure tubes contained slightly enriched uranium fuel cooled by high temperature light water. The reactor also provided 800 MWe to the Washington PubHc Power Supply System. This reactor was shut down in 1992 because of age and concern for safety. The similarity to the Chemobyl-type reactors played a role in the decision. 

One of the factors that influence the magnitude of the placebo effect is the way in which the placebo is administered. Placebo injections, for example, are more effective than placebo pills and placebo acupuncture - which uses sham needles that retract into their handles like the blade of a stage dagger, rather than piercing the skin - is also more effective than placebo pills.19 The most powerful placebo of all is surgery. Approximately 45 per cent of patients with Parkinson s disease get better when treated with sham surgery, but only 14 per cent of Parkinson s disease patients improve when treated with placebo pills.20...

Oshiyaku. A yel, press-loaded expl compn consisting of PA 90 wax 10%. It was much less sensitive to Impact Friction than straight PA and had lower Brisance, Power and Rate of Detonation. It was used as Bursting Charge in nose of some Armor-Piercing Projs, such as Type 95 7-cm (70-mm) AP Proj listed in Ref 3, p 309 (See also Ref 1, p 26 Ref 5, p 368)...

AQUA FORTIS — is composed of corrosives combined in a certain proportion (that is to say, it is impure Nitric Acid), and distilled by a fierce fire it has a most piercing corrosive power. The strongest is called Stygian, which rules Sal Ammoniac with the rest, as therein gold is dissolved.

The primary use for uranium is in nuclear power reactors and in weapons. Low-enriched metal or ceramic UO2 fuel pellets (enriched in fissile U-235) are produced for commercial power reactors. Smaller quantities of high-enriched fuel are produced for shipboard power reactors and weapons manufacture. Depleted uranium, a by-product of the enrichment process, is used for armor-piercing ammunition for the military, for counter balances and weights, and for radiation shielding. A small amount of uranium is used in specialty chemicals and catalysts.
