Protein concentration can be determined by using method of Bradford,9 which utilises Pierce reagent 23200 (Pierce Chemical Company, Rockford, IL, USA) in combination with an acidic Coomassie Brilliant Blue G-20 solution to absorb at 595 nm when reagent binds to the protein. A 20 mg/1 bovine serum albumin (Pierce Chemical) solution was used as the standard. Starch concentration was measured by the orcinol method4,9-11 using synthetic starch as the reference. A yellow to orange colour is obtained and measured at 420 nm when orcinol reacts with carbohydrates. Absorbance is determined by spectrometry. 

Heating MethElute (Pierce 49300X) with drug-containing extracts from body fluids gives quantitative methylation of barbiturates, sedatives, and so on. Follow the procedure provided by Pierce Chemical Company using the MethElute reagent. 

Sequanal-grade triethylamine, obtained from Pierce Chemical Company, Rockford, Illinois, was distilled under nitrogen from ninhydrin, which was also purchased from Pierce Chemical Company.

The third technique we used was a measurement of changes in the sorption behavior of a compound in the presence of humic materials. A thin film of OV-1, a methyl silicone gum used as a chromatographic stationary phase, was plated on the bottom of a 60 ml Hypo-Vial (Pierce Chemical Co., Rockford, 11.). A solution of radiolabeled pollutant was added to the vial in either buffered distilled water in a solution of humic materials. Protein determination procedures using bicinchonic acid were developed by Pierce Chemicals, who hold a patent on the product. The procedure entails the use of a copper-based reagent containing bicinchonic acid. Upon incubation with a protein sample, the copper is reduced. In the reduced state it reacts with bicinchonic acid, yielding a purple colour that absorbs maximally at 562 nm.
