Physician Qualifications

The healthcare system can make relevant information available to help consumers make proactive choices. For example, consumers may be informed about provider performance physician qualifications and experience hospital infection and readmission rates the risks, benefits, and costs of procedures and mortality rates by physician and procedures. 

In this context, judging the qualifications of an alternative medicine practitioner can be difficult— there are no universally accepted guidelines. Some states require licensing of alternative medicine practitioners (e.g., acupuncturists, naturopathic herbalists), and licensure is often used by courts to establish school-specific standards of care. In cases where no licensing exists, courts apply conventional medical or lay standards of care. Eisenberg (1997) has proposed strategies for physicians in guiding patients who seek alternative medical treatment. 

Personnel qualifications for high-complexity testing are stated in the CLIA-88 regulations. The director of the laboratory must be a qualified physician or a doctoral-level clinical scientist. Detailed job descriptions are required as well...

The physicians on the university faculty were not happy to see Paracelsus made a professor without their consent. So they insisted that a colloquy, a public test of the new professor s qualifications, be held. Under ordinary circumstances, a colloquy was only a formality but not this time, as Paracelsus realized when he discovered that Dr. Hock had come from Strasbourg to debate him. The ABAT was established by the AACT to provide special recognition to professionals (other than practicing physicians) who demonstrate exceptional knowledge, experience, and competence in applied clinical toxicology. An examination is administered periodically and is open to AACT members who meet the qualifications. Many other qualifications are also of benefit in pharmaceutical medicine, even if the holder was already a physician, nurse or pharmacist. Whether you choose to employ a professional physician or contract with an outside medical provider, it is important to evaluate specific qualifications. Remember, medical providers are individuals selling a service just like any vendor. However, it is important to understand that you must contract a service that will best fit your needs. In some cases, that may not always be the cheapest method. You should use a bidding procedure just as you would for any service—for example, subcontractors or vendors.
