Formulations. Any formulation is a compromise between the previously mentioned requirements. For example, the fermentation broth may contain enzyme-stabilizing substances, but the application of the enzyme or precipitation problems in the formulation may demand a high degree of purification that eliminates the stabilizers. Alternatively, the pH necessary for good microbial or physical stability may differ from the pH that gives optimum enzyme stability, or a preservative that is effective at the optimum pH for enzyme stability may have a denaturing effect on the enzyme. [Pg.290]

Deterioration of fiber-made objects progresses at all times and can easily be hastened by negligence caused by our lack of scientific and technical knowledge of fabric materials and their environment. The use of Cremophore EL in the microemulsions is avoided nowadays due to several adverse effects such as anaphylactic shocks and histamine release [20 ]. The other important consideration is the concentration of surfactants and co-surfactants which should be minimal and preferably not exceed 20%. Furthermore, it is necessary to ensure that the microemulsion structure is preserved in the presence of the tonicity adjusting solutions such as 0.9% saline solution and preservatives. The parenteral microemulsions should also be able to withstand tests such as freeze-thaw cycling which ensure their physical stability. Controlled-release solid formulations of selected volatile organophosphorus pesticides (malathion, DDVP, sumithion, chlorpyriphos, and sulprofos) were studied by Szente [33]. These solid formulations exhibited negligible vapor pressure and preserved their entrapped pesticide content even at elevated temperature. Malathion and chlorpyriphos formulations showed increased physical stability, and resulted in an effective masking of the unpleasant smell while the complex formulations existed as dry solid. Commonly used additives in the toxicology vehicle are preservatives and stabilizers. Use of antimicrobial preservatives in aqueous vehicles is needed if toxicology vehicle is not prepared fresh but prepared in bulk for later use. Emulsions offer cost advantages in the delivery of water-soluble (or dispersible) flavorings since water is a very inexpensive solvent. The primary disadvantages of emulsions are that they are physically unstable and require preservation from microbial spoilage.
