Physical sensations

Do not be alarmed when you begin to feel physical sensations like goosebumps or tingling. This is merely the physical body responding to the inflow of energy. You will find that this exercise has the effect of invigorating you with the vital current of life. 

Panic attacks are episodes of very obvious physical sensations. Each episode produces a fearful state that can make the patient more sensitive to future episodes. This is called a positive feedback loop, where one event increases the likelihood of a second event, which increases the likelihood of a third event, and so on. Anxiety sensitivity is a prominent characteristic of patients with panic disorder. It is defined as a stable dimension of personality that consists of fears of physical sensations based on the belief that these symptoms have harmful consequences (Reiss et al. 1986). Anxiety sensitivity is not dependent on a history of panic attacks, but rather, it is hypothesized to be an important cognitive risk factor in the development of panic attacks and panic disorder. This hypothesis is supported by some (Donnell and McNally 1990 Mailer and Reiss 1992) but not all (S. H. Stewart et al. 1992) studies with nonclinical subjects.

It is our anticipation of the emotional effects that future events will have on us - people we expect to encounter, actions that we know we will have to take, issues we shall have to confront - which drives us in certain directions and makes us avoid others. When there is a discrepancy between the experience we have Intended for ourselves and what is actually happening, or that we believe will happen, we experience those visceral or other physical sensations known as emotions.

Most of the pleasing physical sensations and mental effects of drugs covered in this section come from the forced release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. Over the medium and long term, repeated abuse has been shown to damage dopamine transporters by shriveling the nerve endings of these crucial cells.

One indicator of mourning coming to an end is when one is able to think of the deceased person or loss without pain or the intense physical sensations. Another is when the survivor can reinvest his or her emotions into life and the living. In some ways, however, mourning never ends only as time goes on, it manifests itself less frequently. Initial concepts of temperature came from the physical sensation of the relative hotness or coldness of bodies. This sensation of warmth or cold is so subjective relative to our immediate prior exposure that it is difficult to use for anything but simple qualitative comparison. The need to assign a quantitative value to temperature leads to the definition of a temperature scale. The concept of fixed points of temperature arises from the observation that there exist some systems in nature that always exhibit the same temperatures. The scientific or thermodynamic definition of temperature comes from Kelvin, who defined the ratio of the thermodynamic or absolute temperatures of two systems as being equal to the ratio of the heat added to the heat rejected for a reversible heat engine operated between the systems. This unique temperature scale requires only one fixed point, the triple point of water, for its definition.

There are two components of pain. These are the physical sensation of pain and the psychological component. The physical sensation of pain occurs when nerve endings are stimulated causing it to send an impulse along the nerve pathways to the brain, which transmits a pain response.
