Risk factors cognitive

Anxiety sensitivity is a prominent characteristic of patients with panic disorder. It is defined as a stable dimension of personality that consists of fears of physical sensations based on the belief that these symptoms have harmful consequences (Reiss et al. 1986). Anxiety sensitivity is not dependent on a history of panic attacks, but rather, it is hypothesized to be an important cognitive risk factor in the development of panic attacks and panic disorder. This hypothesis is supported by some (Donnell and McNally 1990 Mailer and Reiss 1992) but not all (S. H. Stewart et al. 1992) studies with nonclinical subjects. [Pg.418]

Alzheimer s disease is the most common form of age-related dementia and one of the most serious health problems in the industrialized world. AD is an insidious and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for the vast majority of dementia and is characterized by global cognitive decline and the accumulation of P-amyloid deposits and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. Family history is the second greatest risk factor for... [Pg.655]

Dementia is a major risk factor for delirium. Many illnesses may increase the risk of delirium. Infections, cardiac, metabolic and of course diseases in the central nervous system may all make elderly more vulnerable to delirium. Vision impairment and functional impairment are also well-known risk factors as well as premorbid cognitive impairment (Korevaar et al. 2005, Inouye et al. 2007). [Pg.81]

Depression and Diabetes Mellitus. Patients with chronic medical illness have a high prevalence of major depressive disorder [59], Depression may be three times more prevalent in the diabetic population when compared with its occurrence in nondiabetic individuals [60], In addition, microalbuminuria, hypertension, and hyperinsulinemia are another three independent risk factors for cardiac disease in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) [61], Nosadini et al. showed that peripheral insulin resistance, hypertension, microalbuminuria, and lipid abnormalities are associated with NIDDM [61], Further, Helkala et al. determined that cognitive and memory dysfunction are associated with NIDDM and explored the disease s relationship with depression, metabolic control, and serum lipids. The results showed that the NIDDM patients had impaired control of their learning processes [62], Obviously, future research examining the causal relationship of depression to the onset on diabetes and the effect of depression on the natural course of diabetes is needed [60]. [Pg.87]
