Subject relative

Thermodynamics is applicable to the types of substances and occurrences that we are familiar with in our daily fives or can easily create in the laboratory. As a result, it is easy to compare the predictions of thermodynamics with real-world behavior. Needless to say, there are impressive amounts of data that verify the conclusions of this subject. Relatively few examples of the agreement of experiment with thermodynamic theory are given in this volume. The reader is referred elsewhere for additional examples of the conformity of thermodynamic theory and experiment.1...

Initial concepts of temperature came from the physical sensation of the relative hotness or coldness of bodies. This sensation of warmth or cold is so subjective relative to our immediate prior exposure that it is difficult to use for anything but simple qualitative comparison. The need to assign a quantitative value to temperature leads to the definition of a temperature scale. The concept of fixed points of temperature arises from the observation that there exist some systems in nature that always exhibit the same temperatures. The scientific or thermodynamic definition of temperature comes from Kelvin, who defined the ratio of the thermodynamic or absolute temperatures of two systems as being equal to the ratio of the heat added to the heat rejected for a reversible heat engine operated between the systems. This unique temperature scale requires only one fixed point, the triple point of water, for its definition.

In some applications, contamination of a foaming medium with chemical antifoams is unacceptable. Defoaming can then be achieved, in principle, using mechanical means, which include centrifugal or ultrasonic devices. A review of the mode of the defoaming action of such devices is included here. It reveals a subject relatively rich in opportunity for the application of new insight.
