By the addition of iodine to a solution of phosphorus selenide, P4Se3, in carbon disulphide Mai5 lias obtained as a solid substance, tetraphosphorus di-iodide triselenide, PJ Sej, which on rapid heating melts at 154° to 155° C. 

Konstantin Karaghiosoff received his PhD in 1986 from Munich University under the supervision of Alfred Schmidpeter. In his Thesis he developed the synthesis of many new heterophospholes. Further interests of him include phosphorus selenide derived anions and cations, as well as the analysis of NMR spectra of high order. He is Professor of Chemistry at the University of Munich. 

Synthesis of 2-unsubstituted 1,3-selenazoles 24 has been reported by reactions of selenoformamides with a-bromoketones. Selenoformamides are prepared by the reaction of formamide with phosphorus selenide using ultrasound. Because of the unstable nature and volatility of 2-unsubstituted 1,3-selenazoles, the yields are relatively low, 6-28%. The cyclizations were achieved in the presence of either pyridine or an acidic ion exchange resin. The absence of base or the use of sodium acetate resulted in formation of considerable amounts of diphenacyl selenides (ArCOCH2)2Se (Scheme 6) <2005EJO3637>. 

Glass formation and local structure in the related system P-Se-Al has also been studied by P and Al NMR which indicates that the local environments of both the P and Al are dominated by the selenium (Hudalla et al. 1998). Although there is evidence of interaction between the Al and P (the formation of four-coordinated P is facilitated by the presence of Al), a more quantitative assessment by Alp P) spin echo double resonance indicates that direct Al-Se-P links occur with less than statistical probability. These results suggest a glass structure which is partially segregated into phosphorus selenide and aluminium selenide-rich regions (Hudalla et al. 1998). 

Interdependence of phosphorus-selenium couplings in bicyclic phosphorus selenide compounds has been studied by Tattershall and Sandham. " The knowledge of the rules which govern this parameter facilitates considerably an analysis of the spectra of new compounds, in particular symmetrical ones. 

Numerous mixed-metal phosphorus selenides have been reported, for example, K2ThP3Se9, Cs4Th2P5Se,7, Rb2Au2P2Seg Cs3AuP2Seg and so forth [19-21]. 

Phosphorus selenides and any compound which can evolve selenium on heating are very toxic. Any phosphorus compound containing toxic metals such as Be, Se, Cd, Hg or Pb (whether a direct metal-phosphorus linkages are present or not), should be regarded as potentially toxic.
