The ability of a chiral molecule to distinguish between the enantiomers of a second (different) chiral molecule was defined in Sect. II as a diastereomer discrimination. This phenomenon may be observed in a mixed monolayer of two chiral surfactants and may also occur when a chiral substance is dissolved in the aqueous subphase under the monolayer of a second chiral substance. As before, examples of such chiral discrimination would not include those whose difference in monolayer behavior results only from the gross structural differences of diastereomers such as the different force-area characteristics exhibited by mixed monolayers of l-oleoyl-2-stearoyl-3-s -phospha-tidylcholine with epimeric steroids (120). The relevant experiment, that of comparing the monolayer behavior of mixed monolayers of cholesterol with enantiomeric phospholipids, has been reported (121). As might be anticipated from our previous discussion of... [Pg.249]

Since cholesterol is an important component of many biological membranes mixtures of polymerizable lipids with this sterol are of great interest. In mixed monolayers of natural lipids with cholesterol a pronounced condensation effect , i.e. a reduction of the mean area per molecule of phospholipid is observed68. This influence of cholesterol on diacetylenic lecithin (18, n = 12), however, is not very significant (Fig. 32). Photopolymerization indicates phase separation in this system. Apparently due to the large hydrophobic interactions between the long hydrocarbon chains of... [Pg.32]

The association of the acidic phospholipid PI with the cationic linear polysoap PVPC6 is cooperative in both mixed spread monolayers and mixed swollen multibilayers. This association has a condensation effect on the spread mixed monolayers on one hand and affects the properties of the interbilayer structural water of swollen mixed multibilayers on the other hand. Namely the increase in the degree of... [Pg.341]

These criteria prompted us to review and to compare two systems recently studied by us in which mixed mono-layers were formed with either amphiphilic cyclodextrins or poly(ethylene oxide)-bearing lipids and phospholipids [9-12]. The phospholipids simultaneously deposited with either per-(6-dodecanoylamino-6-deoxy) jS-cyclodextrin (CiiCONH-jS-CD) or poly (ethylene oxide)-bearing lipid (PEO-lipid) to form mixed monolayers were dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dimyristoylphos-phatidylcholine (DMPC), respectively. [Pg.301]

Abstract We study the dynamics of two phospholipid monolayers brought into contact by oblique drop impact on a liquid surface and bilayer/multilayer formation. Drop impact without monolayers shows that for low impact angles (a < 23°) and low drop velocities the drop spreads as a thin sheet on the target liquid without immersion and mixing of the two liquids. When drop and target liquid surface are covered with monolayers, bilayer/multilayer formation is expected. The composition and mechanical properties of the monolayers can strongly influence the pattern of drop impact and bilayer/multilayer formation. Monolayers with either pure satu-... [Pg.80]

To prove the existence of separate domains in the mixed monolayer, the tip was scanned laterally above the interface. At a clear ITIES or the interface covered with a monolayer of a single phospholipid (either DPHC or C-16), the current fluctuations during the lateral scan did not exceed... [Pg.209]
