In aromatic alcohols, of which the simplest example is benzyl alcohol (phenylmethanol, 3), the hydroxyl group is present in an aliphatic side chain. Hence they are best regarded as aryl-substituted alcohols. Their properties are significantly different from those of phenols, but are typical of alcohols.
