Phenyl mercaptan

Rats injected intraperitoneally (10 or 20mg/kg) during pregnancy had offspring with severe jaundice, anemia, and reduced performance in certain areas of learning.  

Phenylhydrazine has a faint aromatic odor that does not serve as an adequate warning property.  

The 2003 ACGIH threshold limit value-time-weighted average (TLV-TWA) for phenylhydrazine is 0.1 ppm (0.44mg/m ) with a notation for skin absorption and an A2-suspected human carcinogen designation.

Toxicology. Phenyl mercaptan is a central nervous system stimulant the liquid is a severe eye and skin irritant. 

In humans phenyl mercaptan may cause headaches. By analogy with effects in animals it is expected that more severe exposures would cause central nervous system effects and other systemic injury. 

In rabbits phenyl mercaptan, on direct contact, caused severe erythema and eye injury with edema of the ocular conjunctiva and discharge, but with clearing in 16 days and complete reversal in 2 months. 

According to Klason and Carlson [37] glycerol is formed, however, when nitroglycerine is hydrolysed in alkaline media containing readily oxidizable substances, as for instance phenyl mercaptan. 

Methanethiol and other, lighter alkyl thiols are fairly common air pollutants that have ultragarlic odors both 1- and 2-butanethiol are associated with skunk odor. Gaseous methanethiol is used as an odorant leak-detecting additive for natural gas, propane, and butane it is also employed as an intermediate in pesticide synthesis. A toxic, irritating volatile liquid with a strong garlic odor, 2-propene-l-thiol (allyl mercaptan) is a typical alkenyl mercaptan. Benzenethiol (phenyl mercaptan) is the simplest of the aryl thiols. It is a toxic liquid with a severely repulsive odor. 

The simplest of the aryl thiols is benzenethiol, phenyl mercaptan (bp, 168°C). It has a severely repulsive odor. Inhalation causes headache and dizziness, and skin exposure results in severe contact dermatitis.
