Phenomenal states

Despite Kim s suggestion (1991, pp. 303ff.) of supervenient causation as a possible replacement for my own theory (see Dretske, 1988). My own theory is explicitly about the explanatory status of intentional (not phenomenal) states, and, as noted earlier, Kim himself seems dubious about whether supervenient causation applies to extrinsic mental states (beliefs and desires). 

The first reason that might be offered is that the immediate causes of phenomenal states are neural states. There is a direct causal dependence between the phenomenal and the neural. So, of course, if you fix what goes on in the brain, you fix what goes on at the level of phenomenology.

For this to be possible, the phenomenal states PI and P2 can occur even though the condition for PI to occur in isolation is not fulfilled. Thus, Nl gives rise to PI and P2 only if Nl occurs in isolation (otherwise, we would run into the problem that given one state, these beings would be in every state they are possibly in). Assume...

Let us now look at the basic elements of this systems approach, the basic postulates about what lies behind the phenomenal manifestations of experience, in the following chapters we will put these basic elements of awareness, energy, and structure together into the systems we call states of consciousness.

The best projected solid propellants approach the performance of current operable storable liquid systems. Current solids have a performance somewhat lower than that of the storable liquids, but density and other advantages give them a unique position in the power plant field. I am in a phenomenal situation. I can sit at my desk and have 4.0 GPA minority students walking into my office, stating, I want to do research. The recruiting efforts and the Summer Bridge program are set up and run by the administration. These programs ensure that the students are successful during their freshman year. Then I get them and help develop their interest in research.
