Phenol-formaldehyde recommended adhesives

There are a number of types, based on their chemical structure, but the most important and most widely used is nylon 6,6. The best adhesives for bonding nylon to nylon are solvents. Various commercial adhesives, especially those based on phenol-formaldehyde (phenolics) and epoxy resins, are sometimes used for bonding nylon to nylon, although they are usually considered inferior to the solvent type because they result in a brittle joint. Adhesives recommended include nylon-phenoUc, nitrile-phenolic, nitriles, neoprene, modified epoxy, cyanoacrylate, modified phenolic, resorcinol-formaldehyde, and polyurethane. Bonds in the range of 1.7-6.9 MPa, depending on the thickness of the adherends, have been obtained. ... 

Adhesives recommended are epoxies, nitrile-phenolic, phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, resorcinol-formaldehyde, furane, polyester, butadiene-nitrile rubber, neoprene, cyanoacrylates, and phenolic-polyvinyl butyral. 

Moisture content The usual recommendation is that wood should be dried to 12-15% moisture but, with resorcinol- or phenol-formaldehyde adhesives, this requirement can be relaxed somewhat and wood of 20% moisture content wiU show only the reduction in joint strength expected from the associated reduction in the strength of the timber with the increase of moisture content (Laidlaw and Paxton, 1974). Some melamine modified urea-formaldehyde adhesives are also satisfactory under these conditions. 

Cellular Cellulose Acetate Conventional adhesives recommended include polyurethanes, synthetic resins, thermoplastics, resorcinol-formaldehyde, nitrile-phenolic, and rubber-based materials (8). 

Polysulfone A number of adhesives have been found useful for joining polysufone to itself or to other materials. These include 3M Company s EC 880 solvent-base adhesive, EC 2216 room-temperaturecuring epoxy two-part paste, Bloomingdale Division, American Cyana-mid Company BR-92 modified epoxy with DICY curing agent, or curing agent "Z" (both spreadable pastes), vinyl-phenolics, epoxy-nylons, epoxies, polyimide, rubber-based adhesives, styrene polyesters, resorcinol-formaldehyde, polyurethanes, and cyanoacrylates. The EC 880, EC 2216, and the two BR-92 adhesives are recommended by the polysulfone manufacturer. Union Carbide (16) (17). 

Phenolic Adhesives recommended are neoprene and urethane elastomer, epoxy and modified epoxy, phenolic-polyvinyl butyral, nitrile-phenolic, polyester, cyanoacrylates, polyurethanes, resorcinols, modified acrylics, polyvinyl acetate, and urea-formaldehyde (1). 

Adhesives recommended are epoxies, phenolic-polyvinyl butyral, epoxy-phenoUc, nitrile-phenolic, polyurethane, neoprene, butadiene-nitrile rubber, cyanoacrylates, resorcinol-polyvinyl butyral, furane, and urea-formaldehyde. 

Phenylene oxide-based resins (Noryl ) epoxy, polyisocyanate, polyvinyl butyral, nitrile rubber, neoprene rubber, polyurethane rubber, polyvinyUdene chloride, and acrylic. Polyethylene-nitrile rubber, polyisobutylene rubber, flexible epoxy, nitrile-phenolic, and water-based (emulsion) adhesives. Polystyrene for these foams (expanded polystyrene (EPS)), aromatic solvent adhesives (e.g., toluol) can cause collapse of the foam cell walls. For this reason, it is advisable to use either 100% solids adhesives or water-based adhesives based on SBR or polyvinyl acetate. Specific adhesives recommended include urea-formaldehyde, epoxy, polyester-isocyanate, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, and reclaim rubber. These laminates are usually bonded to a substrate such as plywood, chipboard, or composition board. It is recommended that a balancing sheet be used when these laminates are bonded. This sheet consists of several layers of phenolic-impregnated paper similar to the core in the decorative laminate. When it is bonded between the lantinate and the substrate, the balance sheet prevents moisture absorption and minimizes warpage of the structure. Adhesives that are used include urea formaldehydes, phenolic, casein, epoxy, and polyvinyl acetate.
